Adrenaline and anger are the only things fueling Morgan onwards. Isoke’s muttering had been hard to understand – the only word that had really permeated the smoky mare’s brain was ridge. She’d figured that meant that’s where Isoke wanted to go, so once her muscles had unlocked, she’d thrown herself into the cold, salty channel to stop herself from searching for the monster that had hurt her best (and only) friend.

She can hear the rhythmic splashing from Isoke’s body at her flank so she doesn’t worry about another separation; what she does worry about is going back to Atlantis. It’s been a while since they left the Harbor, betrayed by Anawar, and even longer since she’d been in Paradise, where she’d been born and from where most of her earliest memories, fuzzy as they are, resonate. It was the only time before Isoke that she’d ever felt loved, felt like she deserved to be loved.

When she pulls herself out of the water, onto the Ridge’s beach, she shakes herself not only to remove the excess water but also to clear her thoughts. She’d long ago decided to put her parents out of her mind – since they hadn’t cared about her, she would return the favor. Now that she has Isoke, it’s much easier to keep them locked away.

Her ever-alert eyes scan all the way to the horizon, looking for any sign of trouble, knowing that Isoke likely isn’t in any shape to pay any attention. She vaguely remembers now that Isoke had said something about her father being here, so perhaps that’s why she’d chosen the Ridge over anywhere else, but that doesn’t mean that Morgan will relax. She suddenly realizes that they’d never revealed anything about their families to each other, apart from Morgan telling Isoke that her parents had fought because her father had dragged them from island to island, and that this is what had led her mother to take her to the falls and abandon her there.

She should have shown more interest in her friend’s past; just because she’d been burned by her family doesn’t mean she should shun everyone else’s. She has the ironic thought of having to stand by and watch a father/daughter bond on the same island where her relationship with her father had been severed and shakes her head slowly at how it seems that her life simply refuses to move forward, instead choosing to go laterally.

Morgan is satisfied that for the moment they are safe, so she turns to look at Isoke. Her body is still thrumming with fury, but at least she’s managed to keep her expression calm. ”Is this the right place?”
