B O N D U R A N T
It wasn’t long until she stomped toward him. He raised his heavy head from the water, the droplets still hanging from his whiskered mouth and looked at her beneath the smattering of sunlight that filtered through the trees. She was close enough that he could feel her hot breath coming toward him, taste the distinct tang of her scent in the back of his throat, and for the first time get a good look at her face. The scars crissed and crossed here and there, culminating in three long this vertical strokes across where an eye had once lay. No doubt she had fought with those tawny cats that she so reminded him off. It was appropriate, he thought. The scars that were etched across the rest of her hide interested him more. As he had correctly presumed she was a woman of fight, not flight. He felt the monster stir then, but the time had passed for such things and a grim smile was all that crossed his face.
“Welcome to the Forest,” he said slowly, letting the words drip from his mouth like molasses as they always did. He hung onto the vowels, elongating their sounds even when not necessary. Perhaps he should introduce himself, offer to show her around and some other nonsense. He knew, however, that neither of them would find such a thing interesting or even sufferable. Now that the adrenaline had drained from his system and the sweat had dried on his spotted coat he was interested to see what the woman would do. He expected a verbal if not physical rebuttal to his earlier actions; to be honest he yearned for it. It had been too long since anyone or anything had challenged him on any level. He needed it. Needed her. In too many ways.
