i'll sing it one last time for you

isoke & brienne

In one way, Isoke's firstborn is beautiful. The filly has long, shapely legs and a coat as pale and golden as buttermilk and honey, and her eyes are a clear sky blue with flecks of green around the irises. When the foal looks at her, it's with a gaze so innocent and calm that Isoke can feel her heart threatening to burst with unconditional love. She is an angel, she thinks, and rues the day she had thought of her pregnancy as a curse. But for one thing. The gentle yet unnatural curve of her daughter's snout, bending off to the side at a thirty-degree angle as if she's walked straight into a tree, is difficult not to miss. Time after time Isoke can feel her eyes drawn downwards to the filly's crooked face as if to check that it is still there, still tangible and real and not a figment of her imagination.

All she can do is blame the stallion who had given her his tainted seed for this travesty her first child would have to endure. I should find him and show him what he's done, show him what he's created. But then Isoke meets her daughter's kind, knowing eyes again, and regrets ever having thought ill of the filly's existence. She is my blood too. And I must protect her. Her heart is heavy as she leads her daughter to the beach. The sea is steel-grey and angry today, yet when the filly catches sight of it, her eyes widen with nothing less than awe. Isoke watches her for a time as she wobbles curiously to the shore's edge, her short little tail jiggling with excitement as the frothy waves lap at her tiny hooves. She doesn't realize yet. She doesn't understand that she is different, that she'll know no joy in this horrid world.

Even so, Isoke manages a small smile. She's glad at least that she'd never had a chance to tell her sire about her pregnancy. Perhaps better that he doesn't know. It would only be a matter of time before Morgan knew, however. Isoke is fully expecting her best friend to come bursting through the trees any minute now, and is anxious to see the grullo's reaction to what she's given birth to.
