without the fear we are all as good as dead

He wasn’t good with words, he never had been. Life and his family had demanded more physical action from him than verbal communication and those skills were less developed. Most things required of him took physical prowess and though he might wish to fulfill the emotional desires of his mares, in most circumstances he was at a loss of how to do so. He sensed there was something on Faytes’ mind when she finally responded to him, her voice a bit more thoughtful than normal. The idea of her running about like a criminal did manage to bring a ghost of a smile to his face however. “Ahm glad you feel safe here,” he drawled slowly, not knowing if she knew the weight of that statement

Very little time had passed since his challenger had come calling, the altercation taking a huge physical and emotional toll on the man. If he were unable to protect his family, what was he worth? He had spent hours after the fight running the borders of the Forest, scratching and scenting as much possible to reinforce his claim on the land, but he was painfully aware that it would not deter any determined stallion. Looking at Fayte and how she embodied every female who chose to place her trust in him sent a pang of fear through his heart.

But he was the strong protector, it was his duty, his weakness could not be known. He shifted his weight and grimaced at the pain that still radiated from his rear cannon, a hefty bruise lurking under his dark hide. All physical reminders that he could not fail. At her question however he realizes she may have heard the noises from the fight and that he cannot simply lie to her. “There was a man who came to challenge me for the Forest,” he said finally, his gaze focused out across the quietly babbling water. He loved his home, the towering trees and the stillness that was always awaiting should he seek it out. Somehow he had stumbled on this place that was perfect for him and the idea of losing it, of failing his family, would kill him “There are others out there that would destroy everything I love, and I cannot allow it.” He could not say that it scared the hell out of him as well.
