just a boy, not a hero

The prince’s attention focused in upon the embroidered tester upon which he was lying, his finger tracing one of the familiar designs as a silence descended between the two friends. There was something about saying it out loud that made it hurt all over again. In his day-to-day life Tristan had felt as if he was finally beginning to get past everything that had happened during the big freeze. He didn’t think about his brother or mother as much anymore, especially when he was busy, which he endeavoured to be at all times. He wasn’t quite sure what “getting over it” meant, when it came to something like his recent experiences, but he imagined it like a bridge over some particularly unpleasant ground, filled with all the bad things. When the bad things happened, the bridge vanished, and you were stuck on one side, only able to focus upon the expanding mud. When you started to heal, to adapt and move on, then the bridge came back, and step by step you could make your way over it onto the other side. It seemed to Tristan that the bridge was something that he, Grayson, and Thoth all needed to find. They were living proof of the phrase “nothing is simple in Shaman.”

“I haven’t seen Thoth in weeks,” the prince muttered finally, forcing himself to look up, hoping that the new path of conversation would divert his thoughts enough. There was a distinct sadness to the admission since Tristan hadn’t seen his friend since Thoth had been told that Aura was dead. When Tristan had found out about his brother and mother, the person he had gone to for comfort was Thoth. He had wanted to be there for his friend in the same way, but that had proved difficult when Thoth had vanished without a trace. Another silence. This one, Tristan found, annoyed him. There had been too much silence recently. He felt the familiar sensation of wanting to do something. Sitting still was all well and good (or so Arthur said) but sometimes it really was just plain old boring. Making a decision, Tristan jumped to his feet, surprising Celidon in the process. The boy looked at Grayson with a determined expression on his young face, “we’re going to go and find him,” he explained matter-of-factly, “I’ve looked before, but this time, we’re going to look even harder, and, we are not coming back until we’ve found him.”

Tristan held out his hand for Grayson to shake, as if to seal and oath between the pair of them. They were comrades in arms until their mission was completed. That was how it worked, all the books said so. Making his way to the window, the prince pushed it open wide, and gestured at the ivy that clung to the walls, “we can climb down here,” he explained pointing at it, “then there’s a drain pipe a little further along, that we can slide down.” He paused, glancing in the direction of Celidon and Era, “think you can find your own way out?” he asked his own familiar with a smile. Celidon wagged his tail. Crossing the room again, Tristan pushed open his bedroom door so that the dogs could exit into the corridor beyond and then returned to the window.

He climbed out onto the ivy with the finesse of a seasoned expert, his hands and feet finding the familiar holds as he nimbly made his way down through the leaves, his nails brushed against the rough surface of the stonework as his fingers wrapped around the plant’s woody stems. It did not take him long to reach the drainpipe, and as soon as he had a strong grip on it, he looked back towards the window, and gestured for Grayson to follow. Smiling to himself, filled with a new sense of adventure and excitement, Tristan wrapped his legs around the pipe, and, with a final steadying breath, pushed himself down its length as quickly as he could, until the souls of his boots made impact with the grass below.
