Transgender Day of Remembrance

Today, November 20th, is Transgender Day of Remembrance: a day when all those who lost their lives to transphobia are remembered and honoured. "Transgender" people are those whose gender does not match their biological sex. On a broader level, they're people who don't conform with society's standards of how a man or woman is supposed to look or act. They're born that way. Transphobia, the irrational fear and hatred of transgender people, is a serious issue, and transgender people are the least understood element of LGBT. A recent survey in Ireland found that 80% of transgender people had considered suicide.
The Shaman admins all wanted to mark this day and try to help spread love, tolerance and acceptance in our little corner of the internet. If you believe that transgender people are wrong or confused; if you think that they choose to be the way they are; or if you simply don't know much about them and want to learn more, please take a few minutes of your day to click this link and skim through the excellent information there.
For something a little more fun, you can also check out raisingmyrainbow.com, a blog written by the mother of a gender non-conforming child, CJ. CJ is not transgender, only gender non-conforming, but it's still a wonderful, engaging read and a real insight into the life of the family.
On a slightly more fun note, we have an in-character event to mark TDoR for you!
This event is COMPLETELY 100% optional and can be done in your own way at your own pace, but we highly recommend everyone takes part with at least one character, for the writing challenge if nothing else. In this event, your character switches biological sex - so males become females, females become males. You can pick and choose who you want to change, how many of your characters you want to change, how they change and how long they remain that way. The challenge is to write your character discovering they have morphed into the opposite sex, how they deal with it and how people react to them differently because of it.
When you get bored or when you have completed all your plots, you can have your character change back at any time by making them trek into the forest, pick some special purple berries and eat them. If you want the effects to be permanent, then simply don't write a berry-eating post.
You can switch your familiar(s)' sex if you want. You can switch fairy alone, familiar alone, or both. However you want.
You have total freedom with this event. Any questions, ask on OOC. If you want to use this to fuel a plot, go ahead!
