Aplos Riverside

Moladion’s powerful, winding river...
Aplos River is a broad, slow-moving river originating from somewhere beneath the mountains of Spirane and feeding Iromar’s moors in the south. The northern parts of the river are known for their strong currents, with the water becoming slow moving in the south. The riverbanks vary along its course, ranging from soft hummock grasses to small groups of pine, and sometimes nothing but pebbles and sand. Crossing can be difficult at times, but it can be swam or bridged by fallen trees or boulders alike.

The older wolf steps between defensively in front of the white wolf, but Hickory only lowers his head in response – unthreatened and clearly not a threat himself. He has never been interested in asserting himself into the upper echelon of wolfkind; as long as his belly is full and he has a warm place to sleep, Hickory is content to stay at the bottom of the heap. And until both of his new companions admit that these are not their woods, there was always the chance that Hickory was invading their pack land, and no good could come of an attempt to be assertive.

The other male wolf introduces himself as Iblis, and as a traveler. Hickory supposes that he is a traveler himself, but his intent is not to stay one forever. He is searching for a permanent home, a territory that will eventually be as familiar to him as the forested hills that he had grown up in. There is no returning to his old home, not if he wants to ever be happy, but he is sure that the world is vast enough for him to find another place to belong.

When Iblis asks the pup her name, Hickory’s gaze follows his, resting on the younger wolf. Yet another non-resident of these lands, he thinks with a worried wrinkling of his brow. Where are the wolves that live here? The scent of canine is strong in the woods, but there are too many smells for the pack to be a small one. Surely someone who lived here would have found one of the three wolves before they had found each other? Perhaps this is just a between land, somewhere they pass through but never stay. If so, there might be packs nearby, and Hickory’s tail waves hopefully at the thought.

Now that they have all introduced themselves, Hickory is left in the awkward silence. He yawns (it is nighttime after all, and he’d only just woken up), displaying sharp teeth. Then, because there’s no harm in asking, Hickory says: “So there are other packs around here then? I’m looking for one to join. Being alone’s no fun at all.”
