For the most part, Elowen had traveled here alone, continuously walking for hours at a time until her feet were sore. She could not pin down the exact reason she had left her family, but her sisters were grown and her father was still apathetic about all of his children; it was the right time to go. Others – both well intentioned and otherwise – had come across her; but they either left her alone or she fled, in which case her pursuers eventually tired. It was often lonely, but she somehow knew that those familiar to her could not quell the odd ache she felt within her.
The dark sky was just starting to lighten as she made her way into the gaping pit in the earth. Her mottled grey coat blended well with the stones upon which she trod. It was almost as if she had melted away, existing only as a series of footsteps and a pair of green eyes. Upon reaching the floor of the crater, she looked up to the east, where the paleness of dawn was beginning to spread and blot out the stars one by one. Eventually the sun would bathe the area in light and warmth, but for the moment it remained dark and cool.
Elowen scanned her surroundings first for potential dangers, then for a place to rest. Waves of fatigue were threatening to buckle her legs, and she’d rather curl up somewhere hidden than carelessly flop upon her side for the world to see. If there was anyone around, that is. Thus far she had yet to hear or see anyone, and the only scents filling her nose were stale. All for the better, in her opinion, as it allowed her to worry less.
Sighing, she finally laid eye upon a tiny crevice in the cliff face and made her way over. It was just big enough for her to enter and turn around, but it would do. Lowering herself to the ground, she then rested her chin upon her front paws. As she watched the sun climb higher into the sky, she couldn’t help but think that it stood for not only the break of a new day but the dawn of her new life.
