Although he had lived most of his life so far cloistered in a small den within the center of Malignant, Kavik was not completely ignorant or helpless. He learned from the stories his mother told; despite his refusal to speak, he was just as inquisitive as Kirastasia; he caught snippets and shreds of conversation from beyond the exit of his nursery when pack wolves came to speak to Queens, and was intelligent enough to glean some sort of meaning from them. Kavik was no fool. So when the ink-dipped boy called Kavik “weird,” Kavik experienced a cold, righteously indignant rage that only true understanding could evoke. The prince knew exactly what “weird” meant—and he also was painfully aware of each and every connotation that came attached to such a label. “Weird” was also “wrong” and “silly” and “strange” and “out of place.” That insult stung Kavik like the barb of a wasp. It hurt.

Kavik did not like to be hurt.

All traces of indecision and anxiety evaporated from the royal pup’s face, leaving it a bone-colored mask of unnerving anger. This was Kavik’s true soul stripped bare: a glacial and barren thing that did not know warmth or compassion. It seemed a horrifying expression on one so young, as Kavik had not yet experienced the heartbreaking realities of life outside his own walls, had not yet tasted the agonies that wounded a feeling wolf into this state. He just was. Kirastasia usually prevented him from sinking this low into himself with her naturally brilliant personality . . . but now he was alone . . . and the intruder was alone . . .

The next few insults the sardonic black-pelted lad aimed at Kavik pierced deaf ears. Instead, the espresso-hued hessian was busy eyeing his foe’s neck, that sadly vulnerable spot of softness right at the base of the throat where—

“Kavik! There you are!”

A girlish giggle splintered the ice that had formed over Kavik’s mind. Immediately the shadowy prince was whirling on his paws to greet his sister—who hurdled without warning past the thick leaves of a tangled bush and tackled him in a puppy-hug. Kavik sprawled helplessly at Kira’s feet; she dropped every ounce of her body weight on top of him to prevent him from moving. “I told you that I wanted to go exploring, didn’t I? Why weren’t you at the den when I got back? Mother’s going to be so mad at . . .” The snowy princess’s burbling lyrics faded rapidly away. Her sparkling amber eyes had caught sight of the ashen lad standing obviously close to the border. A broad, excited smile arced across her face. “Well hello there! Are you a trespasser?”

Underneath his sibling’s weight, Kavik grated out a rough warning growl. He’s horrible! Don’t trust him!

Kirastasia happily ignored her brother’s alarm. Unlike Kavik, Kira adored anything resembling adventure. “Come closer,” she ordered, tail wagging frantically. “We’re going to keep you prisoner!” Silently, Kavik rolled his eyes. Perfect.
