At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

He sat silently beside her, his gaze focused on the pool of water as her voice and the soft burble filled the air. Her story was simple as far as he figured and he found himself accepting it without any need to question the details. He had agreed not to judge her and surprisingly, it was easy not to. Her words flowed over his mind, awakening his own memories as he considered the idea of closure. It had been a long time before he convinced himself that his brother was probably dead and had let go of the concept of ever finding him again. It was a miracle that he had survived that war. Well, truthfully, Curse had been his miracle, distracting the large wolf that had utterly destroyed his father. Otherwise Hex would have been just as dead. But Curse had startled the wolf, calling out and convincing the brute that he was the more important target. Hex highly doubted his brother managed to outrun the big wolf.

The sorrow of not knowing and having shunted it form his thoughts for so long struck him as Zelda told him about her trials. He recognized that she had never shared so much information with her before and he felt the compelling pull to respond in kind with his own problems. But he let her finish before he uttered even a single word. When her words drew to a close, he subtly nodded his head, leaning into her too, a small smile on his face since he hadn't scared her off with commitment. If only Akina could have seen how patient he had become. He felt suddenly glad that he had been such a reckless youth because he had grown out of those problems just in time to find Zelda. Licking her cheek and ear, he whispered,

"I would like nothing more than to take you home. But since you shared, I have something I would like to tell you in return."

He hesitated momentarily, willing the words to come before he continued.

"I had...or maybe still have, I don't know, a brother. His name is Curse and he saved my life once after we both failed our sister. We were only pups when a rival pack wiped out ours and I watched my father lose his life before my eyes. His attacker turned on me next but Curse convinced the wolf that he was a better target and I ran like a coward since he gave me the opportunity. I have no idea if he survived. I managed to find my way here, haunted by the horrors I had seen and assuming this very bratty behavior because I felt entitled to it for what I had suffered. It took me a very long time to grow up and get over myself. I forgot about my brother after I got here and for that, I am ashamed. He gave me freedom and I squandered my youth as a needy jerk who ruined most of the relationships I had with others. I like to think now that I am making amends by taking on responsibilities and finding someone else who is willing to give me a second chance. I think he would be proud of who I am now and though I know pride is not the equivalent to his sacrifice, I have to offer what I can to his memory and be happy with that."

He found himself sighing with relief when the words finished, glad to have shared such a thing with someone he knew he cared deeply for and whom reciprocated the feeling. He reflected on the fact that one should never bottle up their feelings...perhaps control them, but never bottle them completely. Smiling in full, he said sweetly,

"The past is past, care to start a future with me?"
