News 08.08.2021
Change was long overdue in Spirane. Now that I have learned who is still an active presence within the pack, the ranks have been updated. As I once took time away from the pack, so too now shall Kalseru. Know that she is still second in command of the pack, as is reflected in her rank. Once you are familiar with the new ranking system, if you would like to change positions or move up in the ranks you need only ask. Let this be a time of new life in Spirane, and a promise of great things to come!

When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.

Swallowbane!” he had called after his son post-outburst, rising to his feet with brows furrowed in unease as the boy fled from the meeting. He made to go after him, but someone from the meeting said, “Let him go,” Or perhaps it was MoonGlow whispering in his ear from across the distance. She understood Swallowbane far better than Alcide could ever hope to. From infancy the boy had been attached to his mother more so than his brother and sister. With a sigh, he had turned back to the meeting and addressed each issue that the other members of the pack brought up. As the sun began to fall from the sky he gave out tasks to those that sought them, and slowly but surely the numbers of those present began to dwindle as families made their way back to their dens. Finally, only Ceal and Daenerys remained, and Alcide sent the two sisters off to return to the den and promised he would be home soon enough.

The hulking beast turned then to the path that Swallowbane had taken up the mountainside, and began to scale the same path. He dutifully followed his son’s scent up the steep, rocky path. For too long he had let the tension that was so palpable between them just boil higher and higher. Alcide just could not understand Swallowbane, try as he might. Many nights it had kept him awake, trying to puzzle out his son. He was so emotional, so ardent – and, most uncharacteristic of one who wished to reflect Moonglow – so seemingly megalomaniacal. The boy seemed to crave grandeur and attention, and perhaps the fault of that fell only to Alcide, who had been unable to give Swallowbane the attention a boy deserved from his father. But where Sleekwing and Orca had been able to move past his unavoidable absence, Swallowbane could not. MoonGlow had known why he had left Moladion shortly after the pups’ birth, had blessed his mission set forth to him by the medicine man who had helped them conceive the three beautiful pups in the first place. Alcide had not wanted to go, but he feared if he did not pay the debt he owed to the medicine man, the pups would perish.

And then the sky fell.

Fate was a cruel mistress, keeping them apart for so long. Perhaps it was the goddess’s punishment to him for copulating with a shamaness. Regardless of the reason, it had taken years of searching until finally Moladion had become inhabitable again that they were reunited. And by then, it was too late. Too late for Swallowbane to forgive him. Too late for him to help raise the boy. The time was lost, and there was nothing he could do to regain it. And when Daenerys had been born, it seemed only to deepen Swallowbane’s hate for his father. Unfortunately for the innocent girl, his hate had transposed onto her as well. She didn’t understand, and frequently asked why her brother would pay attention to Ceal and ignore her. Alcide could not explain it to her, she was too young. But someday he would tell her, when she was old enough to understand, how Alcide had left them when they needed him the most. But even now, as MoonGlow was absent from Daenerys’s life as Alcide had been absent from Swallowbane’s, she was not angry. She only missed her mother. A father could only wish that his son would miss him in his absence, but very obviously that had never been the case.

Steadily he climbed, following the boy’s clear trail. Dusk crept along the horizon, casting the land in shades of purple as he further ascended the mountain. And as he came closer and closer to the highest peak of Spirane’s mountain range, darkness enveloped the land. There before him sat Swallowbane, eyes turned towards the heavens in an almost pleading stature. He looked like he was praying. Alcide wasn’t sure how long the boy had been there, but he moved forward with caution. It was like approaching an injured bull elk. You wanted to deliver the blow that would end its suffering, but chances were he would thrash and maim you with his deadly antlers before you could help him. It was all about the angle you approached from, and this was an entirely new and different scenario to Alcide. How could he possibly help him without hurting him?

Swallowbane,” he said, deep, calloused vocals softened so as not to startle him. “Can we talk?” he asked. It was all he could say. Perhaps Swallowbane would turn and flee again. Or maybe he would berate Alcide with all the harsh words and emotions he had bottled up inside of him. Alcide almost hoped for the latter, to give his son an outlet if he could give him nothing else. He remained where he stood, a short distance away and below him in height given the altitude of Swallowbane’s perch. There was no room for him to come any closer. If the gap was to be closed between them – physically and emotionally – Alcide hoped Swallowbane would take that next step. Alcide had taken the first in coming here. The second step was up to his son.
