At Leisure Lake the sun is always shining and only a few stray clouds roam the open sky; paradise is the one word that really describes it. This beautiful lake is clean and refreshing, the very best place to swim and fish. Pups are known to play here while older wolves watch at the side, engaged in their own activities.

Mae laughed as Terrel pressed his tongue over her head, batting gently at his face with her paw. As she gave up this part of their fight, half covered in the snow she lay in, she told him to let her up. In opposition to her demand the brute collapsed over her, telling her he’d heard the opposite of what she’d actually said. The femme rolled her eyes and whined out, “Terrel…” but had an amused glint in her eyes as she waited to see what he’d do next. Although they were only playing, that didn’t change the fact that as a male he was larger than she, so for now there was nothing she could do to get up.

After only a short time the male bounded off of her. She quickly rolled over, standing and shaking the snow from her pelt. A few flakes flew into her eye and she lowered her head to brush them out with a paw brought up to her face. She then looked up, only to find Terrel sprawled beside her on the ice covered lake. A laugh she was unable to keep inside was released as her muscles tensed, prepared to launch a counter attack. Unfortunately before she was able to do so the brute had scrambled to right himself, obviously aware of her intentions.

“Fun?” Mae tilted her head at his statement as she followed his gaze over the ice, confused about what he meant. This was only the second winter she’d lived through that had produced snow, her current home in Saw Tooth being the farthest north she’d ever been. Although bounding through the deep snow was amusing, despite the cold, she couldn’t see how the plain ice could be. Still, she trusted Terrel and considering that this was his favourite season he evidently knew the weather better than she did. She watched as he stepped out, the surface creaking, and flinched. The surface may be solid, but surely the water was still beneath it, no doubt freezing cold and deadly to anyone who got trapped down there for very long. She was cautious but seeing the excitement in Terrel’s eyes, the femme couldn’t refuse. He seemed to find the idea of walking out of the lake and she would do anything before disappointing him. Besides, the ice was holding his weight perfectly fine so there should be no problem for her, and she couldn’t help her curiosity.

The grey femme was about to step out onto the ice when the brute suddenly fell down with a hard thump, causing her to jump. “Terrel, are you okay?” Mae called out, ears flattened. The thought of something happening to him…she wouldn’t be able to bare it. It was bad enough that she only saw him infrequently, that he’d left the pack. Since then her feelings for him had grown past the point of any friendship she’d experienced. Anything that hurt the male seemed to cause an equal pain in her chest. A sigh of relief left her maw as he pushed himself up with a groaned warning telling her to be careful, and she followed his path out onto the ice.

“Woah!” she called as her paws slid away from her, almost knocking her off balance, “I wasn’t expecting the surface to be that strange. It’s not like anything I’ve stood on before!” She laughed off her stumble, tail wagging, and bent her head to nose at the ice. A small yelp left her as the sudden freezing spread over the sensitive skin. She jumped up, landing with a skid that sent her spinning far out onto the lake. As the femme came to a stop, legs stuck out at an angle that only just held her up, she barked out a laugh and looked over to Terrel with a look of pure glee shining in her eyes. Slowly, placing one paw at a time, Mae began to make her way back over to the male. The ice creaked under each movement but held her as she covered the distance.

Half way there the creaking suddenly increased, startling the femme. She paused, eyes widening, as all around her cracks began to appear in the ice. The surface in the small area surrounding her was much thinner than the rest that she’d walked over, far too thin to hold the weight of an adult wolf. She swung her head to see that the cracks were appearing all around her. Time seemed to stop for a moment as she tensed, ready to jump away, only for it to be a fraction of a second too late. The cracked ice gave in, broke, and her balance was thrown, resulting in the femme plunging straight down into the freezing water below. Her pelt instantly soaked, leaving little resistance to the icy waters and providing a weight that was dragging her down.

Instinct caused Mae to open her mouth in a shocked gasp, and the water flooded her throat and lungs. The femme struggled to pull herself up and was able to break the surface. She spluttered, pulling in only a small breath before falling under again. It was only for a moment and she managed to push a paw out of the water. She managed to place it shakily on the ice by chance, and resurfaced with wide eyes that pinned the male down. “T…Terrel,” she coughed through a stammer, struggling to breath under the pressure the temperature was forcing on her chest, “Terrel…h…help…” Mae’s muscles gave in, frozen rapidly by the lake, and her eyes began to close as she slipped back under the water again. Her struggles weakened as the weight of her body slowly began to drag her down.
