we do what we have to when we fall

Somewhere in his gut, something twinged again at the mention of their father, and Dylan bit his lip as he bit back his annoyance. Now Danny wanted to talk about him? He didn’t know if he wanted to be told that Castiel would have been proud of him, he would rather have had their Dad be alive, shouting at him to be careful as he stood in the uppermost branches of the tree outside their house shouting ‘look! No hands!” Yet, Dylan didn’t want to argue with his brother, he didn’t like being annoyed with him, and so he forced himself to smile a little as he nodded his head and mumbled an awkward thanks. He shrugged, seizing on the change of subject with some enthusiasm, “not yet,” he explained, “I didn’t want to bother anyone before I knew it was definitely what I wanted, you get that, right? I mean, Flynn’s been busy and he says Renn still isn’t well so...” Dylan trailed off, glancing up at his brother’s eyes again, they both knew there was something wrong with their sister, and it worried Dylan that no one ever told them exactly what. He wished, suddenly, that he hadn’t brought it up. It was just what they needed, another elephant in the room.

Books about fighting? A frown creased Dylan’s forehead and he started to shake his head almost automatically as if the whole concept was absurd, which, of course, it was. For a start, Dylan had never found it easy to learn anything from books; he was more hands-on than that. He didn’t mind learning theory, but it had to be accompanied by action. It was easier to visualise concepts that way. He had learned some stuff from their Dad when he had started teaching him boxing...he wondered if maybe Flynn would be able to find him a new teacher. He knew their brother knew a few guards, one of them might know. “You could help me!” Dylan suggested, changing the subject again with a bright smile, “you know I’m rubbish with books, you could read me things from the books and then we could try them out! It’ll be fun! It’s been ages since we worked on something together, and if I get hurt then you can practice your bandaging skills!”

Lunarian cast a glance in the direction of the book on the desk, wondering what Dylan planned to do with it. They would never get it up to their room now! No sooner had he thought it than a telepathic message came through to reassure him; they would sneak down in the night and smuggle it away then and no one would know. Lunarian thought that was a brilliant plan and he looked Solarius in the eye a bit smugly, the tip of his long tail twitching in his satisfaction. “Oh” Dylan replied, waving his hand dismissively, “it was nothing, really, I’m fine. I like to sit on the roof to think sometimes and I just sort of...slipped. It was bound to happen sooner or later, it’s cool.” He sounded like he had done nothing more dangerous that trip over on his way over the drawbridge. Hopefully Danny would buy it and not worry like he usually did. Their Dad had always said that Danny did the worrying for both of them.
