Lunarian threw himself into Danny’s bedroom and bounded across the floor like an over-sized puppy with an excess of energy. The tiger pounced on top of Solarius, one of his front legs wrapping around the other familiar’s shoulders, “we’re going to the training yard, Lazy,” he explained, whilst chewing playfully on Solarius’ ear. Dylan, laughing unapologetically at his familiar’s antics looked away from the tigers to his brother, “yeah, it’s free for the next three hours before they start setting up for a jousting tournament. Flynn asked the King if it was okay.” It was not like Dylan to think to ask people for permission to do things, but he was a bit in awe of the court children with their master-at-arms and he often sat in nearby trees watching them. He did not however want to run into any or get in their way, acutely aware of the fact that this was their world, not his. He belonged in a cottage, not a castle.

“He said we could meet him afterwards and watch the tournament if we wanted, he and Renn are coming down for it,” Dylan explained, as his eyes followed Danny’s progress around his room. A curious frown creased his brow and he tilted his head to one side, at a loss about what his brother was looking for. The items which were eventually pushed into Dylan’s hands raised more questions than they answered. “We’re going to juggle?” he asked, holding the bowl with the sand bags in it in one hand, and poking at them gingerly with the index finger of the other, “I don’t think doctors or soldiers actually have to know how to do that.” Lunarian, who had finally extracted himself from Solarius bounded back across the room and pushed past Danny so that he could stand next to his fairy in the doorway.
“Tell him our news, Dylan!” the tiger enthused, nudging his boy’s leg with his nose.
Dylan beamed, glad of the reminder, “we went over to The Academy yesterday” he explained, “and I signed up for a course. We can go over there together from now on!”

In truth, Dylan was delighted to have his brother back, so delighted in fact that he was prepared to ignore some of his resentment and try to make the best of things. His relationship with Danny was the most stable he had in his life, and, still in the midst of grief, he needed it. After all, they were the ones who had been with their Dad when he had died, not Flynn, not Renn, just him and Danny. He understood completely what it had been like on the beach that day, and he supposed that, for now, he would content himself with that knowledge, even if Danny still refused to talk about it. He grinned as Danny took a step towards the door, snatched up the sandbags in his left hand and placed the bowl upside down on his head. “It’s a hat,” he laughed, by way of an explanation as he took a few step backwards so that Danny and Solarius could leave their room.

Dylan knew the way down to the training yard, and he lead Danny towards the sanded area, past the oak tree that he usually hid himself in. He didn’t tell Danny about that part, but Lunarian ran over to it and started sharpening his claws on the trunk. Typical. The gate had been left unlatched for them and Dylan pulled it open, standing back so that the others could go through ahead of him. When they were inside, Dylan sat himself down in the sand and crossed his legs looking up at Danny with an expression of mock seriousness, “so, what first, Mr. Danny, Sir?”
