 bay blanketed mare of nowhere Dabrood. Is that what they called him, when they did not know his name? It seemed ill-fitting but who was Jezibelle to judge: all names were weird. Words were weird. Perhaps Rurisk had it right, and mute was the way to go. Nothing confusing about body language. The bay mare’s gaze flicked toward the strange trees the skinny mare had gestured to and she grunted in agreement before striding forward. It was the same shady spot she had picked out before being interrupted by the Akhal-Teke.
Jezibelle was mystified as to why her brother would keep such a spindly mare in his herd, but to each their own she supposed. She was not a stallion; who knew what went on behind the broad foreheads of males? One had seen fit to dump a devil-child inside her, while none of the others deigned to notice her. They were baffling creatures and better left alone. Even Rurisk. Who was not here. How someone that big could be so damned elusive was beyond aggravating. Occupied with her own thoughts, Jezibelle maintained her customary silence until she reached the shade of the trees, and then upon turning seemed surprised to still see the smaller mare. "Never got your name," Jezibelle said. It was not a question and she didn’t offer her own introduction, but wasn’t this how conversations worked? She had no idea. "Back at the Arch. But I remember you were with the others." Of course she was with the others. Rurisk would punish anyone who strayed, and that was a lesson that had been made very clear. Jezibelle had been stronger then, and for a time had done her best to distract his aggression from the undeserving mares of the herd. But that part of her life had been brief and gone out as quickly as a candle flame smothered in wax: it was not likely that Jezibelle would ever come between her brother and another horse again. |
