As the mare stepped in, more willing to forcibly wake Thoth than Danny was, the younger boy stepped back to allow her more space. Her nudge seemed to do the trick, as Thoth stirred and said something in a language Danny didn't understand, but could guess the general intention of. Feeling decidedly awkward and out of place, the boy blushed and waited to be noticed. Thoth and the mare seemed to be having some sort of communication between themselves, though Danny didn't understand what was said or why it made him feel all the more awkward. Finally, Thoth seemed to notice him and they spoke again. Danny stood there, awkwardly cradling General and waiting to be acknowledged, while Sol studied Thoth with a curious, narrow-eyed look. Sol understood a bit better than Danny did what was happening; he didn't speak horse, of course, but he could tell that the noises the two were making back and forth weren't just sound.

"I, uh," Danny began, his eyes wide in his face as Thoth whirled around to face him. The other boy was clearly upset that he'd dropped the beaker out the window, but he hadn't seen any other option. Danny was now a rather hot pink color, but Thoth didn't seem to notice or care. He turned back to the horse and issued more noises. Danny and Sol traded nervous looks, each thinking maybe they should have sought out someone else to help with General. Finally, Thoth focused in on Danny with suspicion and, for the first time, spoke directly towards Danny before waiting for a reply. Danny swallowed hard, squared his thin shoulders, and tipped his chin. The expression was supposed to make him look larger and braver, but only emphasized his nervous eyes and furiously red cheeks. "I heard... Well, we know..."

Sol leaned against the boy's side, offering him silent support, and Danny drew a deep breath and started over.

"You help animals," Danny said simply. "And this..." - he lifted the bird gently, his grip immediately softening and his eyes growing concern as General peeped again. Though he'd been hesitant earlier, his next words came out fast and worried. It was clear that he was still shy and nervous about Thoth, but that his worry for the bird was enough to make him push past it. - "I call her General, she's the leader of the sparrows in the garden and I think one of the cats hurt her because she's holding her wing all funny and I really was hoping maybe you could help... her? Or help me help her, I guess. I'm in school to help people, but I'm useless with animals, and General's a really great bird, she only bit me like twice when I helped her out of her hiding spot," Danny lifted a hand free, showing a few bloodied pecks and scratches for his trouble. "And - "

"I think he gets it," Sol murmured gently, his voice audible to the group. "But you forgot something."

Danny blinked at his familiar with confusion, then his mouth formed an "O" of understanding.

"I'm Danny, and this is Solarius. And this is General," he added again, holding up the bird. "Least, that's what I call her."

The boy finally stopped talking and looked expectantly, hopefully, at Thoth.
