Perhaps I am not so driven as to stare at girls yet. I have not yet began to notice the other sex, my mind is much too distracted by other things in this world. She is quite smaller than me, younger in moons. I do not mind the company of a younger soul. In fact, there is something to say about minds so young. Yet she seems a little upset that I do not immediately give her my attention, but I am aware that many young can wish for attention when they please. It is ignorance that fuels this desire, and I am not offended by it, but I am also going to be as I am and not be a slave to her whims.
That does not mean I do not meet her with kindness and a warm grin. She seems to not know about how the world shrinks down below her very paws. I had once not known such a thing, just as I had not known many things at one point in my life. I wish to show her what she may be missing, to expose a whole new experience, a whole new view on the universe that we all inhabit. She seems eager enough with her simple word, and an eager mind is one that I can enjoy.
I am pleased to hear that she is willing to join me, and she moves in closer. Her fur is something of interest to me, and I observe it carefully as she comes to squeeze into my space under the root. She is much smaller than I, as I have grown much over time yet am not an adult. It is easy for her to slip in, and she rests her paws next to mine. I do not let my paws linger though. I lift my charred paw that is next to her, reaching around so I gently embrace her as I lean in close.
My other paw reaches out to point at a small black insect crawling between tall blades of grass. I do not interfere with it. I merely show her where it is. I had noticed a few other small insects, and I have a feeling things may happen soon.
"Do you see? Right there? It is black, and has many, many legs," I say softly. As my eyes stare upon it, the black insect was not alone. A spider lingered in the shadows, and I watched as the black insect crawled in closer.
"Watch..." I say with a growing tension and excitement. I can feel my fur starting to stand on edge as one little black leg steps closer, and then the next, and then the next. I know that spiders were killers in the small world. I bite my lip slightly as the black insect comes into grasping range, the once still spider lashing out and killing the insect in one swift attack. I can feel my tail give a slight pat behind me as I look from the small creatures to the young wolf puppy, wondering what she thought. |
