Drown every sense you own
The past few weeks had been terrifying. Even now Quicksilver was strained and tense, despite the marbled-white filly that followed quietly at her heels. She should have stayed with Lyden. Lyden would have made her feel better about this. Swallowing a lump of fear and regret, Quicksilver looked out over the vast expanse of sea in front of her. The pale filly looked out too, her face an open expression of curiosity. She didn’t look afraid, so Quicksilver tried not to be afraid, either.
“You’ll have to hold onto my mane, child,” she said to the tiny girl. “Don’t let go or you’ll drift off.”
The grulla mare waded into the waves, and the filly followed. Quicksilver hadn’t named her yet, but already the girl looked so much like her mother that it was as if the grulla were seeing herself in a looking glass. The water reached Quicksilver’s belly and the filly kicked off the sand, paddling bravely in front of her. The grulla waded farther in, nickering at the filly, until she too kicked off and began to stroke at the water with her legs. The white head in front of her bobbed and swiveled around, and the filly swam expertly back to her mother and gripped the highlighted mane that floated around her steel-colored neck.
The swim was long, but Quicksilver remembered the way, and soon enough Luthien’s grey-green peak loomed up in front of them. She rose out of the waves and into the Forest side of the island, its familiar scent and vegetation seeming to welcome her. The little white filly shook the water away behind her and trotted forward, just as curious as she had been when faced with the ocean. She was always curious, as Quicksilver had been as a filly. She couldn’t help but smile as they entered the trees and the Forest’s scent enveloped them.
