The red colt stood very still behind the palm tree. His ears were half back, his eyes intent. He carefully looked around the tree at the beach. He snorted, angered at the fly that bit at his velvet nose. An attack like this had to be perfectly planned. The gulls were cunning enemies. Even though they did not look like it. Hopping around and flailing their wings. They gloated at him for being unable to follow them in their airborne pursuits.

Today, they feasted on the remnants of the past hurricane. It had been Sokka’s first hurricane. And he hadn’t been scared. His parents would disagree. I’ll leave it up to you as to which story was true.

Point is, the enemy was distracted and vulnerable. He just had to wait for the perfect time to strike out at them. This time, this time, he would do more than simply make them squawk as they flew off and laughed at him. Oh yes, this time he would be victorious. That is, if he didn’t do something stupid or get overly distracted. The gulls were grouping now over some carcass.

It was time.

Sokka burst from his hiding spot with a proud bugle! His ears back and his short neck arched as much as he could he drove towards the gulls. Who easily got out of the way of the rambunctious colt, squawking all the way. He slid to a halt and snorted, looking up at the enemy as they escaped.

“Fahne,” He huffed, half rearing as the tide gently battered his legs. “Retrea’ fer now! Bud Ah’m watchin’! This is mah beach!” He turned around, kicked up his heels and went back up the bank. Yes, he enjoyed living in a world where he was a warrior standing alone against the feathered assault on his homeland. The silly things kids do when they are all alone.
