I bet you didn't know that I was dangerous

She liked the forest so far. Hickere was nearly overwhelmed by the vast differences this new home boasted to the oak grove she’d grown up in. While the grove certainly earned its namesake by having thick-trunked and tall oak trees scattered throughout its fields it had been much, much more open than the forest was. Everywhere there were trees and sometimes, depending on where she walked, they broke away into meadows of deep green grass. Sometimes she found little creeks and streams to splash around in. But, with the mornings growing colder as autumn took away the summer heat, Hickere knew she wouldn’t have much longer to keep playing about in the water.

She wondered if it snowed here. Hickere had never seen snow, the oak grove didn’t get cold enough for it. Her mother had told her stories about playing in the icy flurries of snow and how the world turned a bleak and yet oddly beautiful white. Standing on a bank of a stream Hickere paused, caught up in a daydream like memory of her mother’s beautiful face. Her heart ached and a smile wistfully caught the corners of her mouth. She missed her mother more than she had ever admitted. It hurt… It hurt to know that she was gone for good. Hickere had thought coming to these islands she had talked about would bring a piece of her back but in truth, Hickere had never had that part of her. Those had been other memories, stories, that she hadn’t been a part of.

Taking in a sharp inhale of breath, Hickere shook her head and licked at her dry lips, coming away from where her mind was fuller of sorrow than she dared to face. Her black tail flicked idly at her rump and she peered back down into the clear waters below her, admiring the myriad of hues from the glistening rocks below. Lowering her lips she suckled a cold drink or two, only lifting her head sharply when she heard a noise. “Hello?” She called out, frowning in curiosity.
