when the days are cold

Danny sent Thoth an apologetic look when Thoth jumped; he should have known Thoth would be surprised, he often lost himself in novels too (though he rarely had time for the Westerns he so adored these days). Of course, Thoth's reading didn't look quite as enjoyable to Danny who, although he had a healthy respect for history, much preferred tales of dashing heroes to factual books in his free time. Danny, who was busily pulling out odds and ends from his bag, glanced up at Thoth's words and met his friend's eyes for the first time since he'd swooped into the room.

"Huh?" he asked distractedly, then blinked and shook his head. He gave a tiny smile, careful not to further his lip injury, and shrugged. "The usual lot. I think they were just bored, and they forgot about Sol. They gave up pretty quick after he intervened."

Sol poked his whiskers out and puffed up his chest, looking quite pleased with himself. Danny brushed a hand over his cheek, giving it an appalled look when he noticed the grime that came away with it. He hurried over to the sink, scrubbing at his face hurriedly. He winced a little as he held a wet cloth to his lip, turning around in surprise at Thoth's suddenly forceful words.

"The big one's group, Tar... something?" Danny answered, squirming a bit under Thoth's dark look. He shrugged again, putting a smile on his face for Thoth's sake. "It's no big deal." Of course, it had seemed like a big deal when he'd been caught about the throat with not even his telekinesis to dissuade the others from bothering him, but at least he'd had Sol. And besides, Thoth was injured and it seemed kind of... selfish, he supposed, to bother Thoth with such an issue. "They normally leave me alone, but... wrong place at the wrong time I guess."

Danny shrugged again. Forgetting his split lip, he started to gnaw at it and winced again as the blood started all over. "Yeah," Danny said reluctantly, misinterpreting Thoth's anger as concern for his lab. "They weren't there at first but when I left they were all in the hallway. But I got the room locked before they could even look in there, so don't worry about any of your stuff, I promise. Oh, speaking of which!" Danny stuck a hand in his pocket, withdrawing the key Thoth had given him yesterday so he could hand it back over. "If you want, I can talk to Birch and see if she can have anyone patrol the halls around there, she just got promoted to captain. Or Sol could go there?"

Sol pouted, just a little, at that. He would gladly go keep an eye on Thoth's lab if they asked, but he was rather looking forward to hanging out more with Morveren.
