Before Dawn's Light

Dusk shook out her damp pelt, and growled softly to herself. The rain and cold had woken her from a light sleep. As her sleepiness began to fade, and her senses were slowly coming back, she sensed dawn was near. She looked up into the black sky, to see pale stars fading, and the sky slowly gaining color.
The pale gray-brown she-wolf licked her lips, realizing her thirst for water. She sniffed the damp air, and growled to herself again. It would be complicated finding food or nearby water when everything smelt wet. She pricked her ears, straining for any signs of moving water. She caught the faint sound of rushing water, and began to make her way through the dark forest toward the sound.
As the forest grew lighter, the sound of water grew louder and louder. Dusk paused every once in a while to shake mud or pine needles from her paws. Soon, the sky began to turn a pale blue, and the sound of rushing water thundered in her ears. The forest was lighter, and Dusk could easily weave her way between trees and thorn pushes. Her blue eyes were set on the path in front of her. The trees and grass began to thin out, and Dusk emerged from the forest onto flat stone that sloped down to a thundering river. She bent her head down into the cool water, and lapped her fill, relishing the coolness.
As the sun began to replace the shadow from the rocks, Dusk decided to let her damp pelt dry in the sun. She settled down onto the rocks, away from the spray of the river, and rest her head on her small paws. She closed her blue eyes, and thought of the mountains, her true home. She was attempting to return, and if she got lucky, would find another to travel with her, unless, of course, that other she became friends or mates with, and that other had a better place to go.
She let the cooing of the birds, and the rushing water lull her into a light sleep. The warm air drying her pelt, and kept her ears pricked for signs of danger, food, or another wolf.
