At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

What do we say to the god of death? Not today.

Life didn’t seem real to the young femme. Her life felt like it was over. Everything she had known was gone. Her mother and father that had raised her were dead. She had lost all of her siblings, but Lady. And now Lady was dead. She had no one to call family anymore. She had no one to call a friend. She had nothing now. She had no home, no one to go to, nowhere to go. She was nothing.

Negative and hopeless thoughts filled her head as she collapsed to the ground, feeling as if she could not walk one more step. Nymeria had paid no attention to where she had wandered off to, all she knew was that she never wanted to get up again. She never wanted to walk again, never wanted to move again, never wanted to be anything again. And now that she had no one, how would she survive this? She was on her own with no motivation for life anymore. It felt like it would end here for her. But there was something deep inside her that would not die, that would never die. The gray and white femme didn’t realize that there was still a part of her hidden deep inside that still held her spark. As she began to cry and curl herself tight into a ball there was a voice in her head, one she had not heard in a long time. The voice of one of the most influential lupines she had encountered, her old trainer. He had been one of the only ones to believe in her, that she did not need to be like her sister and learn to be a proper lady. That she could be like her brothers and learn how to fight and defend herself. The two had met in secret so he could teach her all the tricks that he knew, and his lessons were the only things that had kept her sane when she was always stuck with her sister. And it was his words that rang through her head, ”There is only one god. And his name is death. And what do we say to god of death? Not today.” She did not realize it now, but his words would pull her out of this, his training would save her eventually. He had taught her not accept defeat or death, had taught her to be strong.

But Nymeria felt far from strong right now. Now she was weak and alone and desperate. Desperate for a friend, for someone to cry to, for someone to love her. Everyone she had loved was gone, and that was the hardest thing to cope with. The femme was so lost in her own thoughts and sorrows that she did not notice the approach of another lupine. She suddenly heard the voice of another, and she immediately leapt to her paws, trying to hide the fact that she had been crying. “There, there…why so upset, little lady?” A large grimy, black looking brute stood before her. She flinched when she heard him utter the word lady, even though he would have no idea that that was her deceased sister’s name. She spoke softly, answering his question before examining him more closely, ”My sister’s dead. And now I have no family left.” Her yellow orbs quickly looked at the ground, not wanting him to see the pain that filled them. The brute carried no scent of a pack on him so Nymeria assumed he must be a loner, just wandering around. Was that what she was now? Was she a loner, or did she still belong to Moondown Shadows? Honestly, she did not know. Even though she had been the one to convince Lady to join a pack together, it felt wrong to be in those packlands without her sister, and she was not sure if she would ever go back.

Something about this brute was unsettling to the femme, something inside her told her to run away as fast as she could. But another part of her didn’t want to show any fear, ”Fear cuts deeper than swords,” so she stood her ground, watching the brute as he circled her. “What is a lovely creature such as yourself doing all alone? You seem awfully far from home, Miss Moondown Shadows . . .” Nymeria knew that she should try to get herself away, but she was at a point that she didn’t really care what happened to her anymore. And besides, she did not know this brute, why would he have any reason to want to hurt her? ”I don’t have a home anymore. And why do you care anyways? I can take care of myself.” She spoke with a bit of her spunk back, but not much. Mostly her voice was dead and had no emotion to it, not caring what this strange brute thought of her.
