he had been gone from his mate for not more than a couple hours to hunt for her, and yet there was a sort of niggling sensation that when he had noticed her especially potent distance and (for lack of a better term) put-on lethargy, it was more of a hint than an emotion, and he took it as silently as he ever would.
she would have the pups and he would not be there until she rather wished him to be. it was the way of things and he thought that perhaps he would try to find the male he had scented that had once stirred his imprints attention. hawthorn. as much prey to hunt as the prey he hunted to feed her belly. only this prey was for her mind instead.
it was two hours or so since his departure from her side that he decided instead to howl of his returning to his brothers and prepare them for the arrival of, what he presumed (his bond told him that she was no longer experiencing pain -- experiencing because she did not feel it) was a new father.
only neirin remained without, only neirin would sleep alone on nights that the mates allowed their male of the four to sleep with them and their pups.
he felt for the golden leader, the shining prince of moladion. there was no way to heal the wounds he bore, this they had all seen from fenrir. it never went away, only hid for a while, and the prince did not hide much from his brothers the way he hid it from the world. it is why he was not often at the dens and so often at the shore -- he would not show his pain to the women who ought to celebrate their children. he would stow that away and have a smiling face so long as they were awake and the pups were aware.
first to conceive, last to birth, alice was surprisingly healthy and it was a relief to return to his den and find her in one piece after the frights of both natu and especially everlyse.
he lays at the mouth of the den, puts his head on his paws, and sighs a contented sigh to watch his children, their children, nurse. “what have you named them?” his voice is curious and strangely soothed, pink eyes in a brown head fixed on the two, satisfying, little ones.
