I remain by her side on this night cause we both know its coming. She's been having contractions most of the afternoon though she's experienced enough in this to know when it's time to settle down and go to work pushing. I've only been through this once in my lifetime and with the other wolf, I wasn't there to see it. I didn't feel so strongly for her. I only wanted heirs. I gues the gods told me what thye thought of that when they brought the meteors crashing down and took my would-be legacies with them. Now I'm to be a father again but this time, I'm not going anywhere. This is where I belong.
When she lies down, I push in next to her, my heart already racing wiht adrenaline for what's to come. I don't know what to expect and the thought of her in pain makes me gnash my jaws in frustration. I hate feeling helpless. As she starts pushing, I whisper soft words of encouragement in her ears, even using my native language when her breathing gets rougher. I know she may not understand it but it's the reassuring tone that's supposed to guide her, not the words. I nuzzle into her fur and breathe in her sweet perfume, taking comfort from the rising and falling of her chest.
When the first one comes into view, my chest tightens with pride to see the beauty of my children coming into this world. He holds the pristine white of his mother and father along with his mother's bloodline's coveted red coloring. As she pushes again, my adrenaline kicks up again, not knowing how many she's going to have and how she's going to make it through this. She's very comfortable with the whole situation though, which helps. I watch as if entranced as she licks each puppy clean and sets them to nursing right away. There is no panic on her features. I think she's helping me through this more than the other way around.
By the time both pups are out, they make not a sound but go right to work nursing as if they know they'll need their strength in this strange world. I glance nervously toward the entrance, sure that the smell of blood won't go unnoticed for long in the free lands. I hear rumors of cougars and bears traveling through these ways and a litter of newborn pups would be quite the snack. My fur ripples at the thought and my lip twitches but Seline's soft voice brings me back to the moment as I see her stroking each child's head and naming them. Cuirass and Kronos. Strong names. I smile softly, nuzzling her fur once more.
As she turns to me, my gaze melts into hers. Only she can bring such peace to my troubled soul.
"They will be more than magnificent. They'll be legendary."
