Announcements as of July 28, 2021

I have called you, and you have answered my call --

Do not mistake my silence for weakness, my forest kin. For I am willing to defend you with my fangs and claws, until the days come when am no longer able to. Keep an eye on the borders for Zelda and her sister Midna, because I will welcome them back into the flock on the day of their return.

The flood has left our forest home in a sorry state of disarray. I shall not tolerate this. Summer is here and we must rebuild our dens in time for winter. There is a lot of hard and dirty work ahead of us. But we shall face it together, as family, as a pack. Let's get back to work and then we shall hunt. I hunger for a feast.

From your new Alpha --

Moonshade, the Gravekeeper of Moladion

…cope.

It should have warned her that what was coming was beyond anything she could have imagined.

…mourning…

Even then she still didn’t expect what came next:

Roamin was dead. Their son was gone. Forever.

The words came and went, blooming on Coza’s tongue and dying in her ears, leaving only a shrill, persistent ringing in their wake. And all she could do was stare at him, as if by widening her eyes and pinning her ears against her skull could make them any less true. As if by looking at him hard enough she could make him unsay the thing, could make it go away, unmake it altogether. But it hung between them, it clung to her consciousness like an anchor, dragging her down and down and away from everything else. And still she stared.

Her throat was dry and she could feel the denial on her lips, but she knew that there could be no denying it. Were it another wolf, someone less equable in his honesty, she would have raged, demanded proof, or simply walked away. But not Coza. Not him. She knew he would never even consider a joke about anything like this; he would never give her such grim news without knowing that it was true. She managed something between a sigh and a cough, a sound without words, and Hush dragged her eyes from his face to the trees. She found no comfort in them.

Their branches raked the sky like bones.

She screamed then. It came unbidden and she was powerless to stop it or to put a word into it and when it was gone it left her with only pain. The tears came next and she sank to the ground, pressed into the dirt by the weight of the nothingness that was all she had left of her son. Roamin was dead. Her pride was dead. She didn’t care if the whole of Moladion bore witness to her tears. They choked her, though she tried to speak; she was incapable of anything more than a string of inarticulate sounds: “N – it – Coza…please - ” Please, what? There was nothing she could ask for, or that he could do, to make it easier, to make it better, to make it any less than what it was.

Finally, she looked up again, chest and abdomen still heaving between breaths. Her voice was raspy when it came, and so quiet. “I – I should have…I should have been - ” She shook her head, fighting for the words that didn’t want to come out. “I was supposed to be here!” She stood now, possessed by the surprising power of her own voice, moved into action. She had to do something. Hush paced briefly, frantic steps that took her nowhere, but ultimately there was nothing she could do: she’d been denied even a mother’s vengeance. Her violet eyes, dark with grief and wet with tears, latched themselves onto Coza’s, and she crumbled when she saw her pain mirrored there. “I should have stopped it. Oh god, Coza – I was supposed to be here…Roamin - ” Her voice cracked, the moment of lucidity gone, and she pressed herself into Coza’s neck, lost to the sounds that could not become words.

Why her son? this boy, this perfect boy? Who could take away a life like Roamin’s? Perfect in his innocence and his kindness and his infinite curiosity about the world. What kind of monster could move to snuff that flame? She found no peace in knowing that his killer was gone. She found no peace in knowing that he was, at least, not suffering. She wanted blood to atone for this, and revenge at anyone else’s hands didn’t feel much like anything except more loss. But there was no amount of blood, and no amount of tears, that would ever bring Roamin back to her…and that was the worst of it all.

THE FOREST RANKS

THE GRAVEKEEPER

The Alpha Male of Taviora. He will accept all challenges and block any steals. He has taken an oath to protect all within the forest, alive and dead.

THE KEEPER OF SECRETS

This will be Moonshade's chosen co-alpha. They will also be able to accept challanges and steals in order to defend Taviora.

THE KEEPER OF TRUTHS

This rank will belong to the chosen heir of Taviora. This wolf will probably share Moonshade's blood. This rank can be challenged for if you believe that you are a better candidate for the job.

THE FOREST COUNCIL

Although the Alpha's have the final say in all matters, Taviora is still a pack, we are still a community. These wolves are the most senior members of our ranks. Their role is to guide, serve and protect. All of them have earned their place here and they should be respected at all times. Every position on the council can be challanged for by a subordinate pack member. However the council has the right to block a pack member from gaining the position if they have concluded that the individual has placed their own selfish desires before the best interest of the pack as a whole.

THE TUSKS

The packs lead fighter. One of the strongest and bravest in our ranks. They will answer the call to protect the forest if either of the Alpha's are absent.

THE JAWS

The packs head of defence. They are our chief hunter and guardian to all within the forest borders. They know every inch of Taviora and every wolf within.

THE HORNS

The packs most senior teacher. They are responsible for teaching and guiding all of our young and new members so that they will reach their full potential.

THE EYES

The packs trusted informant. This wolf spends a lot of their time outside the forest borders, keeping their eyes, ears and nose peeled for news or potential trouble. Due to the secretive and dangerous nature of this rank, only a wolf that the pack can trust with their lives will obtain this responsibility.

THE DARKDWELLER

This is Taviora’s Head Healer. This wolf is responsible for treating the pack's wounds, injuries and illnesses. They are also expected to be one of the first on scene when a mother goes into labour. Along with their counterpart, The Soothsayer, they will train future healers for the service of our pack and our allies.

THE SOOTHSAYER

This is Taviora’s Head Counselor. Their knowledge of healing and herbal remedies are equal to that of their counterpart, The Darkdweller. This wolf specializes in helping us conquer the unseen demons in our heads and our hearts. They are also expected to help bring all children of the forest safely into this world.

NIGHTWATCHERS

Our trusted packmates that guard the borders while the rest of us sleep safely in our dens. If something is amiss within our lands, they should be the first to intercept any threat and call for back up when needed. Some might not call themselves soldiers, but they will spill blood if push comes to shove.

DAWNSTRIDERS

The most diligent and selfless of our pack. They are up at first light and leave our inner sanctum every few days in search of prey. They hunt far and wide in order to make sure none of us go hungry. While not out hunting, they are free to relax or assist the Nightwatchers, Daylightres or Dawnstriders with their tasks.

DAYLIGHTERS

This group will make up the bulk of our pack, they are our beloved family. They are generalists and commoners who are charged with looking after the most central and sacred parts of our home. Along with The Horns, they are expected to watch out for our children. We are happy to keep all within our ranks that love and respect the forest of Taviora.

DUSKWALKERS

Rumoured to be the most free spirited and independent members of our pack, they guard when no other eyes are available. They wander down all the winding dirt paths and have been known to explore into the freelands. They are envoys and ambassadors who assist The Eyes with their duty of keeping us all safe.

ANCIENT PINES

These wolves are older and have retired from active service. We thank them for all that they have done for our pack, however long or short their tenor was. They shall live out the rest of their years with the best food, shelter and company we can offer them.

THE BRIAR PATCH

This is the name for Taviora’s nursing mothers and their litters of puppies. Once they are born, at least one parent is expected to temporarily step down from their role in order to raise their pups for the first 6 months of their lives. An exemption can be made if another mother is willing to look after the young while the parents resume their service to the pack.

THE SAPLINGS

Too big for the briar patch but not yet old enough to be called a daylighter. These are all puppies between the age of 1 and 3. Pups can start their training from 2 and above if The Horns has found a suitable Mentor for them.

THE WELCOMED

These wolves are welcome within our borders anytime of the day or night. Blocking their access will be met with disapproval and possible punishment.

THE BANISHED

They are enemies of our pack and their presence will not be tolerated within or near our home. Those caught in contact with a wolf on this list will likely share the same fate.

THE SACRED TOMBS

Our brothers and sisters that have sadly left us for their next adventures. We give thanks for their lives and we send them on with all our love, hopes and dreams. Moonshade will accept the bones of any wolf that has ever called Taviora their home and will find them a special place within our hallowed grounds. Every burial mound is individual and sacred. Tampering or messing with one will not be tolerated. A crime against the dead will be treated as though it has been committed against a living pack member.

Remember, we are always watching from the shadows ...
