The size of the Stokes cats was difficult to determine and controversial. The reason I and others decided they were house cats is because one of them walked with an erect tail, twitching it as it sprayed backwards. Cougars cannot walk or stand with erect tails, and they do not spray backwards. (Many other wild cats do, including leopards, jaguars and tigers.) Cougars mark while squatting.
