"Hello, Captain," Turic said, sounding rather calm despite the fact that his eyes kept sliding longingly for the back door. Birch was known for her fairness, but everyone knew she could hold her own if she needed to. "Long way from the Castle, isn't it?"

"It's for a good reason," Birch said with a small smile, slipping into the seat across from Turic without waiting for his invitation.

"Oh? And what could the likes of me offer the likes of you?" Turic said suspiciously, sitting back in his chair and crossing his arms over his chest in a defensive posture.

"I'm pregnant," Birch said in a low voice, a voice not meant to carry very far. "And-"

"Hey lady, that ain't my fault!" Turic exclaimed nervously. Turic wasn't the sort to hurt children - born or unborn - and Birch's not-so-subtle announcement meant he'd have to find a way out of her grasp without any form of violence. Not that he'd necessarily planned on violence, but... things happened, and if it were between Birch and him, well... He rather liked breathing, thank you very much. Birch let out a low laugh.

"That's not why I came looking, thanks," Birch said, sitting back in her chair again and eying Turic. "I'm looking for something for the father, and I hear you might have what I'm looking for."

"What? I don't have anything..." Turic said, scooting his chair back as if he were preparing to run. A heavy hand clapped onto his shoulder, squeezing just enough to convince Turic to stay put. The massive, heavy-set man behind Turic gave him a toothless grin that was somehow more menacing than a growl. Birch gave another small smile.

"See, that's not what I've been hearing. It's rather specific, a stone about yea big, with a funny marking on it. You see anything like that around?"

"No, nothin-" Turic began, but fell silent when Big Toothless yanked on a cord about the man's neck to expose said stone.

"Mmm, yes, that's the one," Birch said, pretending Turic hadn't just lied to her face. "Are you willing to deal?" Birch slipped a small piece of paper with a figure on it across the table. Turic started to take it but then withdrew his hand, looking angry.

"It's mine!" Turic growled, pulling the cord out of the giant's hand and glaring at him. The giant seemed unperturbed, probably because he could snap Turic in two with a sneeze if he so desired. "I found it fair and square!"

"Oh, is that so? Well in that case, I'll just have my men take a look at your quarters," Birch said cheerfully, leaning forward until not even Big Toothless could hear. "I'm sure we have friends who would be interested to know what it is you're keeping there."

Turic gulped audibly, his head finally bobbing in agreement. "Okay, okayyyyy. Let's deal." His grubby hand reached for the scrap of paper, but Birch snatched it away before he could touch it.
