From the day Nephilim was born he knew what it was to be nipped at. He knew to dart away when a hoof lifted up from a ground, or to click his teeth when ears laid flat. He knew what it felt to get a kick as the days passed. He learned what lines not to cross. But that was all with his mother (Nephilim knew not that mother’s weren’t like his own, he was convinced the stern and sometimes harsh way he’d been raised were of the norm). Though his mother may loathe him for reasons he’d had no idea he should be looking for, she was still his mother. Her nips may have grasped his skin and bruised it and her kicks may have knocked his legs out from under him once or twice, but she was his mother.
She was not a strange, unknown bachelor stallion. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) her behavior had raised a fighting spirit inside Nephilim and he’d yet to be truly taught a lesson in fighting. Perhaps today would be the first of many. Too young and unseasoned to properly get away from the kick or even know to defend against it, Nephilim doesn’t move in time and the strange stallion’s hoof hits his leg, eliciting another squeal and a roll of the whites of his eyes. Now that Nephilim has become angry and is too dumb to understand the danger of taking on an older stallion that could, quite easily, do enough damage to possibly run him lame or kill him, he decided the time had come to fight rather than run. He only moves away from the stallion in order to turn about and point his rump at him, though with plenty of time for the wiser of the pair to avoid the kick altogether if he so wished it. Nephilim gathers the momentum, rocking his body and kicking out with his back legs – a little hop to get him off the ground before he’s bucking. Later he’d feel the repercussions of using that sore, going-to-be bruised leg, but with adrenaline going and a lack of proper battle strategy, Nephilim only knows he wants to fight back.  |
