Maddy clapped her hands with delight, as Grim dropped into a curtsy. It didn’t matter to her that it wasn’t perfect. Etiquette suggested that Maddy ought to correct the little girl, Grimbaud, and show her how to gently hold the fabric, not clutch it but that seemed so down to Madeline, she did not want to ruin the moment with lessons.

Madeline would not have had the chance to correct Grim anyhow, as Nanook had taken center stage. The polar bear was a down right sucker for all human foods. She was well familiar with the crinkle of paper that treats were often wrapped in, and the bear had suspected the girl-child would have something tasty on her, somewhere. Nanook was quite glad it didn’t take long for the treat to make an appearance. With a sly smile at Gisli, Nanook hefted her bulk forward and shimmied across the garden toward Grim.
The bear was a more than a little fat, and quite tall, she cast a large shadow over their small gathering as she waddled up to Grim. Nanook nudged Madeline as she passed, bumping the woman slightly as if to say, look at my new best friend, hmmm…? Never mind sticky fingers! After a moment of quick thinking, Nanook got down on her belly, her front legs folded in front of her. Now she was more on a level with Grim, and with a contented smile, Nanook opened her jaws wide.

”Oh.” Madeline whispered in immediate embarrassment; her attention completely diverted toward her bear, ”no…”
As if she’d known Gisli more than a handful of minutes, Madeline rolled her eyes at the large cat and shook her head in silent apology.
”Well, at least we’re all acquainted.” She gave a strained, uncomfortable laugh and shifted from foot-to-foot, eyeing her familiar and Grim.

Then, with a flustered outburst, “oh, you, greedy bear! You are a polie bear, indeed. A big, fat polie bear, please shut your mouth, your breath stinks and you don’t need treats!”

Madeline twisted a bit of apron in her hand and blushed mightily, hardly believing she’d become so worked up. Really, it only happened when she was embarrassed.

”Ah, except, I’m sorry, Grim, she is not a polie bear, as “polie” is a made-up word. You see, but sometimes made-up words can be used to emphasize a point.” A thought occurred to her then, and she let go of her dress, turning her attention away from Nanook and back to Grim.

”Where is your cousin Prince Tristan, Grim? I’ve noticed the castle is awful empty as of late. I’m hoping to be employed here, you see.” Madeline smiled widely at that announcement, while secretly hoping the little girl only had the one treat on her. Though she suspected, taking note of all the pockets on Grim, that there were a good many things hidden away on the child. One treat would be a miracle, in reality there were probably ten or more.

[ ooc / Fenn, I don't think i ever mentioned in our e-mails, but Madeline has not had much experience with children. though she loves them dearly and perhaps gets along better with them because they're innocent and so is she ]
