bay blanketed mare of nowhere

Rurisk lifted his head from the grass and snorted a low warning. Jezibelle left off grooming her brother and turned her head to observe the horse approaching them, her right shoulder even with Rurisk’s left hip. The two draft horses stood together, buckskin behind the bay, with their ears pointed at the stranger and tails flicking idly at flies. The stallion was a little heavier and a little taller than his sister, his wheat-gold coat marred with many silver scars across his neck, withers, and back. The mare held her head at shoulder level and the muscles in her spotted hindquarters were tensed, as if she were prepared to run. Neither spoke as the stranger stopped a polite (and safe) distance away and greeted them both in a voice that reminded Jezibelle of sunlight streaming through the trees. She closed her eyes and tried not to sag.

Rurisk snorted again. His head was held high, his weight balanced evenly on all four hooves. Any tension in his muscles was attributed to his anticipation of driving the other stallion away. Jezibelle felt his adrenaline each time their bodies brushed together from natural, unconscious movement, and she opened her eyes and lifted her head a notch to regard the stranger. His posture was not threatening, and the words he spoke were not hurtful. He did not appear to be here to harm either of them and, as the three horses were all in a public area, she knew Rurisk had no right to attack the other male. And he would not, if she told him there was no danger.

“There is a grove in the Forest where willow trees grow, on the southern edge of the territory where the stream widens to spill into the ocean. I spent a lot of time there as a child; it’s very secluded. You remind me of the sunlight that spilled through the hanging branches when the wind was strong.”

Behind her, Jezibelle felt Rurisk’s muscles slowly relax. She flicked an ear toward him but did not remove her visual attention from the bay stranger, a stallion a little shorter than the pair of them with a coat like hers but much darker due to the water that clung to him still. Either he was new to the Islands or he had just arrived on the Crossing from another territory. Jezibelle could not begin to guess which it was: every horse on these Islands was a stranger to her. Only Rurisk mattered now. She heard him pull up another mouthful of grass and was glad that his aggressive, wary attitude had mellowed in the months they had spent wandering the Crossing together.

“What are peace roses?” she asked, still standing with her head half-raised and ready to run. Breeding season brought out all the flight of her fight-or-flight response. She imagined if she ever did bolt, Rurisk would remain behind to deal with the threat that spooked her. He had proven himself a most capable bodyguard: the two siblings hadn’t spoken to another horse in almost a year.
