While Luke checked the ledgers, Theoden bent over and rubbed Indigo's ears. Then he couldn't resist, he looked around the yard until he found an old piece of wood. He grabbed the well-chewed stick and wiggled it at Indigo. The dog responded with a happy wag, eyes glued to the stick. The dog knew this game! Theoden was more than pleased. With a strong arm, he launched the stick as far as he could across the yard. He chuckled as Indigo took off with the spy energy of a yearling.

"800 dubloons, eh?" And he knew the small coin pouch he carried held only half that amount. It was a relief then, that Luke suggested trading services. Theoden nodded eagerly. "I am, actually, a Smith of sorts. Smith-in-training, as it were. Not quite journeymen yet but always willing to practice the craft."

Indigo ran up to his side then, dropping his slimy prize politely next to Theoden's foot. The blacksmith's face melted as old memories surfaced of playing fetch with his childhood dogs. However long the work took, he'd get it done and then some if it meant bringing Indigo back with him. Halle Fossen really had known what she was talking about, telling Theoden to "get a dog."

"I'll look into lodgings at the castle for a stay of two weeks. That will be time enough to repair the kennels. If I can make a few new clasps and rings on the side, all the better." He struck out his hand toward Luke as if to shake hands and seal the deal.

Under a spreading chestnut tree
The village smithy stands:
The smith, a mighty man is he,
With large and sinewy hands;
And the muscles of his brawny arms
Are strong as iron bands.
Longfellow
