A Slim Silver Lining

There was a sigh of relief somewhere in Nim. The small fairy rediscovered her courage and met Madeline's eyes as she was speaking. She did not want to be rude, but more than that it had been a long time since she had heard such a friendly voice. It also didn't seem to Nim that this was one of those nobles, or at least not one to fear. Having never grown up with a class of nobility, only the wealthy, middle class and poor, Nim never felt sure of herself around them. In Canada they had been a long extinct ideal from a different country. The queen was the face of currency, including the little joke of flipping a coin to let the queen decide. It felt rather alien, but Nim offered a slip of a smile that even managed to set her hazel eyes aglow. She looked a little less lost with a smile.

"Yes, I was headed to the library," Nim responded, holding out the badly drawn map with terrible proportions with a head shake, adding, "I hope." More relaxed Nim's transparent gold wings, dragonfly wings, fanned out behind her. Her eyes also took in the polar bear that had steadied the other fairy and gave a deferential nod. That was not a familiar Nim would like to bother.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Madeline, Nanook. Welcome. I'm Nim," she could have stopped there, but it had been so long, "I'm hoping the court is back in session soon as well. It's part of my studies. I haven't spent even that long at the castle as I don't really see how I can fit in..." Nim didn't want to bore her with details. "I haven't been to the library yet, but if you'd show me I needn't stay too long so long as I can take out some books. It must be warm in there and I wouldn't want to impose." Also, stone walls and castles were a poor fit for the modern fairy that willed herself into Shaman without fully understanding the changes at hand.

If Nim noticed how eager the woman seemed to be, she did not let on. Truthfully, it had been a long time since the auburn haired fairy had company, particularly the sort of acquaintances she ought to be making. Many were sweet, but very few she had met on Shaman read. Clearly, this woman was not just a housekeeper, since housekeepers didn't need to read. Nim wasn't about to be indelicate and ask, but it would at least be cordial to make the woman's acquaintance properly. Her smile seemed a bit out of place. It had been a long time since she had smiled and she had never been the sort to smile easily. At least when she did smile, it was not the type that never reached her eyes. It was genuine.
