Kairos growled in response to the rough shove she received for drawing near to the boy, enjoying his closeness as a reminder of Zagan, whose face she had not seen for many days. He narrowed his gaze at her, voicing his disapproval to which she curtly replied, “I don't care!” He promptly ignored her, moving past her with an unsettling expression in his green eyes. Confused, but hungry enough to comply, Kairos moved to follow his tail, wondering at magnificently long pelt he wore. It dragged in the dust for now, but he would surely where it like a king when one day he grew. She smiled jealously, both enjoying her creation and envying him his beauty. Still, she was no sight for sore eyes either, and she comforted herself with the thought as she came to rest beside the male, trying to hold herself back from chasing the deliciously vital rabbits that hopped so tantalizingly close.
When at last she understood the plan, she crept around the field as silently as she could. Luckily, a light breeze stirred the grasses about her and the noise she made with her young and clumsy paws went relatively unnoticed. Only when she finally broke from cover, barking like a maniac, did the rabbits turn and flee. Stretching her legs out as far as they would go, she sped across the earth, dodging holes and snapping at the velveteen tails of the creatures as they disappeared around her. A few, however, did not follow their friends to ground, and these she herded towards where she knew her friend was hiding. Her jaws slavered as she anticipated the meal awaiting them and, with a last burst of speed, she chased a small pariah towards her waiting companion. The unlucky creature belted straight into Lonhro's waiting jaws and the pair was sent rolling noisily across the earth. Kairos followed at a stiff trot, panting with exhaustion and yet proud of her cleverness.
The blood that spilled from the kill called to her, and she moved towards it eagerly, only stopping short when the black male with the emerald eyes stood over it, growling and gnashing his teeth with formidable ferocity for one so small. At first she was taken aback, the anger coming in a hot rush after her initial surprise. She snarled defiantly, blasting him with her breath, ready to launch her meagre weight onto his shoulders. Only a sudden, mischievous plan saved the boy from a sharp reprimand at her baby teeth. Struggling to hide a devious smile behind an annoyed frown, she spoke, “Very well. I've never caught rabbit before but deer meat is just as delicious and that's something I know how to hunt. I brought a baby one down just over that hill. If you won't share, I will keep it all to myself.” Turning from him, she set off in the direction she had indicated, tail straight up in the air and nose held disdainfully high. Out the corners of her black, black eyes, she surveyed the boy's expression, hoping to coax a reaction out of him.
Heyel would have been proud.
