I'm A Slow Dying Flower
Frost Killing Hour

Her bare feet are careful to dodge and weave around the multi coloured bricks that lay strewn across the floor. What her girls had been doing with them she wasn’t sure as they hadn’t been stacked into anything she could recognise as a structure but then that was where their imagination came in wasn’t it? Whatever Evelyn and Hels had been using them for had been abandoned over an hour ago when Hels had dragged her older sister outside to play in the garden. She may have been the youngest but Hels certainly seemed to have a way of convincing her older sister to do whatever it was she wanted something Phoenix worried over a little but then Evelyn always worried her somewhat. Her beautiful little red head that’d lost some of her confidence since Aura had left. She’d hoped that when Hels was born she’d have gained some of that back but no it seemed Hels was already set on looking after her big sister. At least if Hels biting the last two children who’d made fun of Evelyn’s red skin was anything to go by. Her children looking after each other was a good thing as far as Phoenix was concerned and she hoped it was something that would continue as they got older even if she could already see the signs that they were very different.

Her foot lands on the point of a brick and she bites back a curse. For years when she’d been young she’d gone everywhere bare foot and not cared if she stood on stones or pebbles but one child’s brick these days and she felt like she’d been crippled. She still loved the feel of the earth beneath her feet, having grass tickle her toes or mud squelch between them but she’d grown up and boots had become practical so now the only tie she got to enjoy being bare foot was in her garden or visiting Jensen at the beach or on rare occasion around her home but perhaps not when her children had left the floor littered in toys she was trying to clean up into some kind of order. The order just happened to be a pile in the corner. She’d nearly finished when she heard her son’s voice calling her and pushing her hair from her mismatched voice she followed the sound into the kitchen. The smile that had been on her lips at the sight of her boy back home began to fade slowly as she noticed the seriousness that had come over him. Whilst it was rare to never that she invaded her children’s thoughts with telepathy she could tell just by looking at her boy that this was something that had been bothering him a while. So she nods her head and sits down across from her son and waits for him to tell her why he’s there. Something that knowing Brae won’t take long.

The muscles in her jaw tighten and her hands bunch into fists a few times as he asks her a question she’d been hoping to avoid for a while longer at least. The subject of his father had always been something she’d been quick to brush off or avoid. Everyone had memories they didn’t like to visit; how Brae was conceived was one of Phoenix’s. She’d loved her son since the moment she’d held him in her arms and she wouldn’t deny him the truth of who his father was but it so very complicated and she wasn’t sure she had the tact to make the explanation painless for either of them. “I can tell you who your father is but there are some other things you need to know as well okay?” It’s not really a question she needs answered because the only way this will happen is on her terms. “Now some of this you’ll already know but bear with me because this is the only way I can do this,” she stops and takes a breath before launching into it. “What feels like a long time ago now I used to live with your Uncle Jensen in what’s now known as Augury Vale. We lived on the mountain. Me, Jensen and even your Auntie Morgana. Now when the seven curses hit Shaman there was the flood and for a time we stayed at the castle and then after that me and Jensen made a home in the caves at Silver Cove. We were there when the war broke out and before I ever chose a side I ran across who we all thought at the time was Mallos and he…” she stops unable to look her son in the eye and she instead focuses on the wall, “he forced himself on me.” If there was some other more tactful way to say it Phoenix didn’t know one. She wants to stop but knows she can’t she doesn’t want to stop now and be bombarded with questions so instead she continues on, “So you were born during the war on Apeliotes Island and it wasn’t until a few years later that we learned that Mallos was actually Gwythr in disguise, although all the children that he’d created in that time were Mallos’s.”

Phoenix stops and studies her son hoping that this has made sense to him. “At first I didn’t tell you because I didn’t know how to or even if this version of Mallos was any better than what Gwythr pretended to be. After everything he’s done for Morgana though… well I decided when you were old enough to understand I’d tell you. And I suppose that’s now.”
