It was rather like a slap in the face that Whimsy hadn’t slapped him, Calvin thought confusingly to himself. His face seemed stuck between awe for the little tiny fragile thing that Whimsy held out to him and muted horror that he was here and wasn’t getting punished for it. His brown eyes were like saucers with coffee spilled all over them set in his brilliant skin, which seemed to be turning a little paler, yellower as the blood dove away from his face. His hands tingled and he hesitated before taking Darby. All nerves accounted for he wondered if he might drop the fuchsia being right then. That horror convinced Calvin and he held the baby close to his chest where all the muscles of this puny body might better offer support.

“Thank you,” Calvin said with a small swallowing of his pride. At least he had been forgiven. He had better stay humble and tame at least for a week or two.

“Agreed,” Peets said to Whimsy. These days her fears were forgotten and her smoky voice was confident, even arrogant, as she replied. She added, “I should have been a fly, to need so many eyes.” Peets snorted in Calvin and Darby’s direction. The last bit she added just to Calvin, And don’t bring that thing with sticky, grabby hands anywhere near me. She flicked her tail in a dismissive sort of way. “I’ll stand guard,” Peets said aloud, blocking the door entirely unnecessarily since no one in Shaman had offered Calvin, Whimsy, or Darby any harm. It was the best excuse Peets had, though, for excluding herself from further eyeball melting sweetness.

“Darby,” Calvin said in his high, sweet voice as if tasting the name. “Oh Darby, there are going to be so many songs for you!” Calvin’s eagerness surprised him. While any feelings beyond friendship for Whimsy had fled, he felt a protective, loving surge towards this little being. They had so much in common already; Calvin just knew it with all his confidence. The color was returning to his cheeks as he excitedly ran through everything he could teach Darby, forgetting his embarrassment for the time being.

Then it all came flooding back, adding a brownish-purplish tinge to his green cheeks as Whimsy clarified that they were not a couple. No… He really couldn’t be a partner to anyone. All those instincts and feelings had fled once he had returned to his own body. Calvin quickly shook his head, then nodded, then tried to speak and swallowed in air. Silently coughing and trying to hold it together so that he wouldn’t disturb the baby on his chest Calvin laid Darby down in his crib before he had thought he would. Then he leaned over gasping in breath.

“No, not a couple,” Calvin finally agreed rather hoarsely. At least they were still friends, though. Calvin pulled up a chair after hammering on his chest a bit more. “But I’m so glad you’re going to let me be a father.” He looked on at Darby and Whimsy, uncertain which one would fall asleep first as he sat at guard, Peets outside doing the same, and took a mug of tea from Addie.
