Soft black ears had come to be in a permanent backward position. Adelheid’s confusion about the world and the hypocrisy that faced her at every turn had become bone deep. So deep it was starting to resonate within her being. Blue eyes watched the freedoms of her sister and those of other fillies in the Peak. Taika, whether she had been allowed or not, was constantly exploring and looking at the world through bright and excited eyes. Even Inka seemed to skip away every now and again for reasons unknown to Adelheid. Her mother’s forays were not unnoticed by the yearling, and when she noticed them for an extended time she snorted to herself in frustration. The times she had tried to explore, disaster had struck and her mother had looked at her so disapprovingly on the cliff with the two stallions. The other time she had snuck out of the Peak she had been shown real magic for the first time in her life; and had not seen it since.
The filly was mildly taken aback at Impa’s assertion that she would have taken the stallions’ freedoms away. When she was struggling with her own desire for freedom and the ability to roam, restricting another seemed like a far more harsh punishment than she might have intended. On the other hand, them coming into the Peak had jeopardized the feeling of safety the mares were assumed to enjoy in this place. It was their right. If one took a right for a right, what was truly righteous? Her mind worked furiously trying to solve this conundrum. In her mind she raised the stakes. What if it was a life for a life? What if it was just a mistake?
When she looked back at the draft mare her expression softened. She knew the Prime Minister had nothing to do with her ill-content, and did not deserve her anger and rage. So, she snorted, trying to release the aggravation into the air instead of keeping it in her. She hung her head and kicked lightly at the ground. The whole truth was no one flat out told her never to explore, or look around the island. But every time she had left her mother’s side she had been scolded, or gotten in trouble. Inka’s protective gaze never let the filly out of it, and so she felt shackled.
“Mother tends to scold me if I wander too far. My friends and my sister come and go as they please. The times that I did adventure I got in trouble, except for the time she never found out. So, I have stayed. I don’t want to upset my mother.” The filly’s head hung and she looked with an almost longing down the side of the mountain, to the rest of the island. “But I don’t want to be stuck. I know there is a lot more out there, and a lot more to learn.” She hesitated a moment, thinking about the wonderful things she had seen once, and the wonderful things her sister and Taika often talked about. Her heart broke still further, while her mind strengthened in its resolve. “Even if I cannot see the world the way my friend does, I still want to see the world in a way I can. I don’t know what it would look like.” True blue eyes looked back up at this near stranger mare she had come to trust and respect through their one conversation. “I just don’t know what to do.”
