At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

Immediately after she spoke, the reaction in Kira was immediate - she spun, going skidding across the ice. But, within seconds her claws apparently got traction, and she lunged at Kahlan, tackling her. Normally the ess would have been able to hold her ground, but the ground that they were able had been saturated with water and when winter's cold fingers had gone digging, all of their tendrils had frozen the water, causing it to become ice. Kahlan slipped and fell and as she did, she felt Kira's limbs slip around her shoulders and her muzzle slip into the thick fur around her nape. Kahlan laughed for the first time in... Well she could not remember how long, but then as they stayed in that position in silence, her laugh died off. Once more she became somber and morose. Slowly, the opposing femme dismantled herself from the tangle that was Kahlan's body and then Kira's ambers caught hold of Kahlan's suns. The femme, however, could not hold Kirastasia's stare. What happened, Kah? Kahlan turned her head and looked away before rolling and getting to her feet. As she stood, she shook, and debris from what once was Saw Tooth fell from her pelt. Ash. It was the only scent that she could smell in her nares anymore. It haunted her dreams with scenes of destruction and fire. Even her pelt still carried it. Suddenly, though, Kira's paw grazed against Kahlan and she began to tremble. It had been so long since she felt such a kind, soft touch that she broke, the tremors continuing. Are you here to visit the Falls? Or did you . . . run away? Tears began to well up in the femme's orbs, pool of water starting to stain her facade. "I have nothing to run away from, Kirastasia. My home is... Gone... Kenshin left me - we had had a fight... And Saw Tooth is no more." Kahlan sniffled, trying to control herself, but eventually she just collapsed. "I led those left of the pack to Aurora Borealis... Kalgalath was the only other Alpha Moth was close to, that I know. But I am not their leader. Saw Tooth was my home. Not Aurora Borealis. Not any other pack. What am I to do? Where am I to go?" Her breath caught as she remembered the last words Hellene had told her before Kahlan had left Aurora Borealis. "My brother is dead. I don't know where to go from here. I have no family left..." |
