Shamanimal

Name: Arsu

Description:

A small marsupial born with fur which solidifies to rough scales at two years old with the scales becoming smoother and smoother as the creature ages. The oldest known Arsu was fifty years old. This hair, or the scales they become, come in shades varying from a pale yellowish white albino, complete with pink eyes, to butter, wheat, or umber shades with the potential for melanistic individuals. On top of this coloration they have wide green or brown stripes running from a mask around their luminous green or gold eyes all the way back to their prehensile tail and it is possible to tell individual Arsu apart from the intricate differences in the way this stripe becomes braided into the surrounded fur turned scales. Some seem simple and narrow, or even to fade away underneath overlapping scales, but others seem almost like braids.

Arsu have a prehensile tail that is as long as they are and has a thick green tuft that takes longer than the rest of the fur to harden to spines, only hardening completely after ten years, from the inside out. This tail tuft has two dark eye spots on it. If at risk of discovery they can use this tail to distract a would-be predator—a sacrificed tail grows back through the course of a year. This means that usually only the safest Arsu actually have hardened tail tufts.

These scavengers, with teeth that indicate their omnivorous nature, at most grow to be a foot long with another foot of tail. Their main weapons are fierce retractable claws which are hollow on the underside for digging. Usually they live on the outskirts of Shaman society feeding off garbage and stolen goods or near the shore, fishing out of tide pools. Despite their scavenging nature, Arsu are meticulous groomers and use a tongue almost as long as their tail to clean their long, pointed snout, koala type ears and offspring. Up to two offspring may live with an Arsu until their fur is set into scales, being carried in the marsupial’s pouch. The Arsu’s body has powerful shoulders for digging which slope up towards higher hips and sturdy muscles to brace against when digging.

An infestation of Arsu can undermine the foundation of a building as they have been known hollow out underneath old buildings in search of treasure. Arsu will carry off shiny things, especially those in which they can see their reflection. Whether this is some form of territory protection to hide burrow entrances or desired for grooming purposes is unknown.

Found: Shoreline and nearby significant fairy populations.

Eats: Meal scraps, leftovers from other kills, insects, vegetables, tidal pool critters, and fruits at any stage past ripe.
