aurora borealis- noun plural: An aurora that occurs in northern regions of the earth. Also called northern lights.

In the middle of a dense forest of coniferous trees lies the Aurora Borealis pack, its name coming from its location. At certain times of the year, the northern lights appear, dancing almost magically in the sky. A narrow trail leads you through the close evergreens. Giving into temptation, you begin moving your paws. By venturing into this territory, you are venturing into a land belonging to a pair of feared leaders. You have heard rumors of them...but you decide to take your chances and hope that the tales of blood and death are merely fabricated stories to scare wolves.

You have walked nearly five minutes before you realize the sound of paws stepping somewhere from behind. Deciding that you've made a mistake, you quickly turn around, but find that you cannot go any further. Standing before you is one of the mighty kings you've heard of. His blood red pelt clings over perfectly toned bands of muscle. But that isn't what causes such fear in your veins. One of his amber eyes has a horrid, bleeding scar across it, and his good eye seems to stare right through you. His face is expressionless, giving off none of his intentions. You cower away as his jaws part.

"I'm Hell Demon."

His voice was deep and cut through the air like a hot knife through butter. Right where he left off, another voice picks up from behind you. You whirl around and find yourself facing another male with steely muscles beneath his pelt, which seems to consist of every shade of brown. He had startled you, and you're amazed how you hadn't at all detected his approach.

"And I am Ghost...we're the alphas of Aurora Borealis."

His deep voice was laced thickly with a Native American accent. His own golden eyes are directing a harsh glare your way. Now you're caught in the middle...your breathing has become heavy in your panic and you're not sure which to face.

"You've foolishly trespassed into our territory. You face the one called Hell Demon's whose voice is once more addressing you. Get out, or become a corpse along our border."

It's obvious they mean business. So now it's up to you...take your chances and stay, or heed their warning and waste no time getting out with your life.

Loyalty means nothing unless it has at its heart the absolute principle of self-sacrifice

Right after the pack meeting, Sebring had ran to their den, shaking and shivering, mumbling something incoherent about a bad piece of meat. Kalgalath had to hide his smirk and said nothing - she apparently didn't have a lot of knowledge about pups or childbirth. Kalgalath had seen many in his time, and knew that these symptoms - the increased appetite, the sickness she felt, her weakness - could all be attributed to her pregnancy. And so her pregnancy had ran its course, with morning sickness, pain, and lethargy. Kalgalath had worried himself about her, constantly trying to catch her new and different prey in order to hopefully find something that woudln't bother her stomach, but henceforth nothing had worked consistently. Each day, he when to Hellene, worried that it would be a disease and not the pregnancy, and each day Hellene had yelled at him to leave her alone and stop worrying - It was Sebring's first pregnancy, so she would likely be more reactive to the changes going on inside of her body. Still, after multiple days of Kalgalath bothering her, Hellene had finally given him a branch of a fir - it looked like most of the ones inside of the territory, but the healer had said that it was a slightly different species, one with a different number of needles in each bundle - 5 instead of 7, or 7 instead of 9, whatever it was that the timberess had said. Kalgalath couldn't remember exactly.

The King had asked the healer one more question before being kicked out of her den - why had she waited so long to offer up this herb. Hellene had told him it was because it could cause more harm than good if too much was ingested. And so, proudly, happily, he had presented it to Sebring, telling her to only chew one bundle twice per day, and to never swallow the needles, just as Hellene had prescribed them. The next day, Sebring had seemed calmer, her tremors and nausea much decreased, and she could keep down meals as long as they were small meals that she ate frequently. Kalgalath had stopped having to hunt, for the prolific amounts of snow that had blanketed the whole of Aurora Borealis had served as a cooler, and all of the meat that they had had left over from whatever Sebring previously had been unable to keep down was now safe for the keeping and available for the eating. Kalgalath could not put into words how much calmer he was, feeling useful finally. He was always the go-getter, the helper, the protector, the savior. But until Hellene had given him the fir branch, he had been useless.

Kalgalath had taken a step back from his duties, knowing that his pack members would pick up his slack, especially since he had made it public that he and Sebring were expecting pups in the spring. Each day that brought them closer to the shift in seasons, the more excited the King had gotten, the more nervous he had gotten. Yes, he had witnessed many whelpings, and they usually went smoothly... But not always. The dam sometimes died, not surviving the entire process, be it from blood loss, exhaustion, or infection. And even more common was the chance that the pup died. The thought of either brought Kalgalath to a cold sweat, and he realized that he had perhaps been selfish in wanting pups with his mate. He loved her, and could not stand the thought of losing her. If it came down to a choice between pups or Sebring... He would choose his mate every time.

This morning, as per usual, Kalgalath was the first to wake, the smallest slivers of sunlight forcing their way through the dense, thickly covered branches of the pines that made up their utopia, their home, their den. Smiling, he raised his head and shook the slumber from his lids, before turning his head so that his arctics would fall upon her abdomen. Sebring had grown with her pregnancy, the pups swelling her abdomen with life. The gentlest of motions was seen, if only you watched long enough, and Kalgalath looped his neck over Sebring's, his tongue running a line up her mandible.
