At the mention of finding more pretty things to play with, Jakuta’s tail wagged behind her and she barked excitedly. Pale blue eyes watched as the adult sniffed at the dead thing too and then she offered to teach her how to catch them. “Yes! That sounds like fun. Come on, let’s go!” she said, following the wolfess as she led her to a batch of butterflies fluttering above a cluster of wildflowers. She didn’t notice the way the older wolf looked this way and that, trying to find her mother or her father. Jakuta could have told her, but the question never came up so she didn’t even think about it. One of the many things she didn’t think about. Like most children, the white girl lived for the here and now. There was just so much to do and it was all so exciting.
“I’m Jakuta. My sister is Athena, but she didn’t want to come out with me. Well, I’ll show her that I’m having fun without her.” The sound in her voice seemed to falter at the mention of her sister. The young goddess loved her sibling, but she wished the girl would leave the den. They didn’t have much of a relationship and it made the white girl feel sad and unwanted. But, the thought was gone as quickly as it had come when the butterflies started dancing overhead.
It was time to show off! The older wolfess asked if she could jump to catch them and the white girl let out a happy bark. Crouching down as low as she could, she ran pushed hard and leapt as high as she could. Her tiny paw swatted at the butterflies, but they easily flew just out of her reach. It was a quick lesson in gravity and Jakuta landed back down on her side, knocking the wind out of her slightly. She groaned and growled up at the butterflies. “Hey, lady, why don’t they want to play with me? If they don’t play with me, I’ll hate them forever!”
