Aplos Riverside

Moladion’s powerful, winding river...
Aplos River is a broad, slow-moving river originating from somewhere beneath the mountains of Spirane and feeding Iromar’s moors in the south. The northern parts of the river are known for their strong currents, with the water becoming slow moving in the south. The riverbanks vary along its course, ranging from soft hummock grasses to small groups of pine, and sometimes nothing but pebbles and sand. Crossing can be difficult at times, but it can be swam or bridged by fallen trees or boulders alike.

Dragonfly’s ears perked forwards at the dramatics in his words. She had already pinned him as a flatterer, but she’d never met a wolf with such a talent for it in so many different forms from actions to playwright brilliance! Her pink eyes gleamed with admiration for the poetic speech - she was a sucker for fancy. Could she come up with something just as theatrical? Maybe if the opportunity presented itself, she could astound him with her ability to word weave.

For now, action was more prudent. Dragonfly uncurled her tail from around her paws and stood when he eagerly accepted her invitation. It was easy to see even from her seat, that she sported exceptional conformation, but standing gave her the exceptional aura of her ancient lineage. Primitive instinct was a powerful heritage to carry on and she bore it proudly, knowing the development of instinct would aid her in the coming hunt.

Dragonfly didn’t worship instinct, however; it was a poor substitute for the consciousness wolves developed since old times. Her family added to self awareness over generations by pursuing the graces of high esteem and knowledge. While Dragonfly was still naive from lack of experience, she possessed an analytical mind to interpret information given to her through her journeys. She was beyond thankful to her parents who nourished that fact, for it was why she could so confidently leap into blind dating - which she was really enjoying! Her tail waved at his playful challenge to her desire to impress him.

She hoped that she would! He had certainly impressed her, but she wasn’t entirely sure that she had impressed him well enough yet. She needed to be seen as a potential mate, not a young wolf, after all. Hunting would provide that opportunity, she was certain. Eagerly, she set off beside him, her nose twitching every so often when she picked up small mammal smells (none of them large enough to feed two wolves). His inquiry of her chosen life as a loner surprised her, but was pleased all the same by it and it showed his ability for more serious conversation

To his question, she answered, “For a combination of reasons. The most influential one is that I was raised nomadic; the tundra doesn’t allow wolves to settle in one location nor can it support large groups. So, I get restless staying in one place. The second is that packs create stereotyping. I am far more individualistic than that and would rather avoid the tag of a pack’s reputation.”

She considered her own statements a moment to make sure that she meant what she’d said and also that she had answered him thoroughly. Satisfied, she returned the question to him, “Why have you remained a loner, Jackdaw?”

Dragonfly noticed the shift in direction and she followed him, inhaling to pick up the scent of the prey they were pursuing. The rustic scent of deer filled her nasal cavities. What a perfect meal for a date! A fawn would be tender and a rare treat. Loners, to avoid hurting themselves, generally stayed clear of larger prey, but with two of them, a deer was a realistic and special idea. Judging by the distance they had to travel, they had a bit of time left to converse before they would need to adopt silence for a brief period of time in order to sneak up on their prey.
