Loyalty means nothing unless it has at its heart the absolute principle of self-sacrifice ....................................................................................................................................................................................
Gwaine had nearly believed Kalgalath – the king had seen the façade on the opposite brute’s face. It had fallen, his eyes had flashed downward… and then Kalgalath had revealed his jest. Gwaine tried to play off his own jest, but failed miserably, his harrumph unbelievable. Kalgalath laughed, a deep throaty laugh that resonated loudly from his maw and the King was glad that he had moved a decent distance away from his grove, for it would have surely would have woken his wife. But no – she would surely sleep deeply and soundly on this day. And she needed it and deserved it more than anyone else. She had come so far…
As Gwaine apologized for waking him, Kalgalath shook his head. “Nonsense! I can sleep when I am dead, I am happy to see you once more, to see you returned here.” Gwaine spoke about his own empathy for women, and Kalgalath offered what little advice that he could offer, before speaking about some of his pack members – faes like Magic, Chenzii, and Hellene – who were without love. Magic and Chenzii had similar histories in that they had been left, but to his knowledge, Hellene had never experienced love herself. And afterward, on Kalgalath’s only half meant jest, Gwaine promised to never hurt a single one of them. Time passed, and their conversation flowed smoothly, nothing rushed, nothing hurried. Just two old friends becoming acquainted with each other once again… or rather perhaps for the first time, since their first meeting had been brief – in battle – and they had not spoken much. But it did not matter – their souls were close enough for their short time together to mean enough. “I would like very much, then, for you to join Magic’s training session. Perhaps you or her will take over that position, with the other as the apprentice.”
Midconversation, a solid ebony form collided with him, a high pitched whine pulled from a maw, and without even seeing the rest of the body, Kalgalath knew who it was. Her scent swarmed into her nares, filling them with one of the most familiar that he knew. A feminine perfume that he had come to know very well over the last few… and the vocals – even though there were no words, none were needed. Chenzii was one of the wolves that Kalgalath was closest to in the pack – she had been there nearly from the beginning of his reign, and had never once had she given him a reason to doubt her. She had always been loyal, and had always been a good friend… but she had had a string of bad luck. Her mate had left her… and then returned to her only to leave her once again. Kalgalath had sworn to Chenzii that if he ever returned, he would not live to break her heart again. And of course there was the loss of her brother, who had been in Blossom Forest only to leave to explore his own life elsewhere. In most recent life, things were even worse – one of her pups had died, succumbing to the bite of a venomous snake. After Vita’s death, Mortem had fled, not wanting to live in the pack without his sister… or perhaps he did not want to stay in a place that reminded him or her. They had been polar opposites – Vita had been the light and the voice of the two, whereas Mortem had been the strength. He had been the adult so that she could remain to be the child. But they were gone too. Everyone in her life had left her thus far…and in that she was nearly a kindred spirit to Kalgalath. Only now, he had found his happy ending… it was time for Chenzii to have hers.
‘Kal…I’m…sorry…’ She pulled away and saw Gwaine and backpedalled before apologizing once again, this time addressing Gwaine directly. Her words were mumbled, and Kalgalath shook his head, raising his brows. This was so unlike her, for her to have such a lack of confidence, for her to be so unsure of herself. As she introduced herself… and apologized again and Kalgalath stared at Gwaine and cocked his head slightly, gesturing toward Chenzii with the smallest of motions. Turning his artics onto Chenzii, he smiled and reached out and nuzzled her gently before pulling away. Before the grey wolf could introduce his friend, the opposing brute was already murmuring words, introducing himself before answering Kalgalath’s previous question. “Well, my friend, I am glad indeed that your wandering has brought you back here, and that it is here you chose to call home. Chenzii, Gwaine, if you both would forgive me, I desire to get back to Sebring. If she wakes and I am not there, I fear she will worry. But Chenzii – could you please show Gwaine around the pack, perhaps help him find a place to make his den… or show him the empty ones in the mountainside? I would appreciate it very much.” He paused, waiting for her response. “I do thank you… and I am sure I will see both of you around soon. And Gwaine – come to Magic’s training session. I think you will like it.” With that, he trotted away from the ravine and back to his den. If nothing else, perhaps Gwaine could make her smile. As much as Kalgalath wanted to coddle Chenzii, to play the protective bigger brother, perhaps what she needed now was a push out of her comfort zone, someone to take her mind off of things. If nothing else, Gwaine could become a friend to her… at best… perhaps something else entirely.
