During the day, sentries guard the sleeping. When the sky is dark and the moon dances with the stars, this is when the real fun begins. Munashii Gekko's forest is the only haunt where you can find your local misfits all in one place. A land of the forbidden and forgotten, a place that is riddled with dangers of a whole different kind. The wolves here have long misplaced their rightful minds, and now live like creatures damned to prowl and lurk through the night. It's easy to lose yourself here, sanity was sure to fade away and wither; there was never anything normal about this nefarious nest. The silent threats that whispered in the breeze were enough to deter even the largest of demons around. It was not strength nor wit that ensured your survival here with Eric, and challengers would be torn down with a morose lethality - there was nothing left in his cold blue eyes that promised mercy to anyone who dared to overstep their worth. So, would you give up the sun for the moon and stars? Do you have enough vigor to become a well regarded sentry? - Put on a game face to step up and pass the sepia king's test or turn and leave before he catches your scent. You never know who wants to snack on your delicious blood in this forest.

The silent understanding that seemed to vibe between the two males was comfortable. It was strange. Titan had never had a very good relationship with any other male other than his son. And even Braveheart and he were never very sincere with each other. Their love language, so to speak, was swearing and sassing and being generally facetious. The openness and vulnerability that he was allowing himself was uncomfortable. But feeling secure that he could trust Horizon, at least enough to handle that information with care, that part was comforting. The entire conversation they were having was helping to ease the black and crimson male into the idea of eventually being able to engage with the pack as a family.

His maned counterpart chuckled at the mention of ranks, dismissing his old rank. Titan smiled and nodded. He had figured as much. Not that he assumed Horizon would or wouldn’t be good with pups but he had a feeling the male would strive for more. He mentioned considering the gamma rank, backing up his statement with his qualifications for the job. It didn’t really feel like an official interview or anything, but the king liked what he was hearing.

“But I’m always open to whatever you think will be best for the pack, in regards to rankings.”

The two came to a fork in the path and instead of choosing one way and continuing on, he stopped and faced Horizon, his emerald eyes focused on the other lupine’s mismatched pair.

“I’m glad your eyes are set on gamma, that’s exactly what I was hoping to hear. Your reasons are clearly based on what you feel qualified to do or, you know, with what you could most help the pack. I’ll always want to see that rather than a wolf that’s just in it for the title. The official decision will be made between Ameira and myself but for now you’re definitely in consideration for that rank.”

Blood Titan didn’t want to promise more than he could deliver but on some level he knew that Ameira would approve. He gestured with his skull down the path to the right that would take them further back into the territory rather than continuing towards the border and began walking once again.

“The liaison skill will develop in time, I might even run a workshop on it soon. It’s mostly political, using the right verbiage and adhering to certain protocol. And we know you can handle border patrol. The gamma will have absolute authority to allow in new wolves. They will have to meet with Ameira and myself and pledge their loyalty at a meeting which we’ll hold once a month or every other, depending on how much activity there has been, but being welcomed by you means they’re a member. That’s your designated responsibility and having that rank means we would trust your judgement. It will be recommended that, especially for busier seasons, you would find at least one or two apprentices if not more. Anyone welcomed by the apprentices will be welcomed in on a probationary membership. It’s not a big difference but they wouldn’t be allowed on group hunts or group outings until they met with either you, Ameira, or myself to be officially welcomed in.”

Titan took a small pause, allowing the information he was giving to be processed. He was being as detailed as possible at this point to be sure that Horizon knew exactly what he was volunteering himself for.

“The recruitment part of the job is not the main focus but it probably will take up more of your time during slow seasons. Like now, for example, when we don’t have many new wolves coming to the borders. We want to encourage large numbers in our pack land. Safety in numbers is a good sentiment but it’s an understatement. There is survival in numbers. Not just safety but food and exercise and procreating and really thriving is based in numbers. Recruitment is about knowing how to approach others and how to convince them that our little home for outcasts here is worth consideration over barely scraping by on their own. It’s also knowing not to push. If a wolf is just down right resistant then we probably don’t want them here in the first place.”

The large canine considered carefully how to word the next part. The recruitment process wasn’t as simple as finding someone and bringing them home. There had to be safety measures intact but there also didn’t need to be babysitters that were stuck leading wolves back and forth all day. He had sort of figured out a system for this, and although he had yet to run it by Ameira, this was a smaller detail that he figured they could tweak if necessary.

“For recruitment purposes, each wolf that is authorized to recruit for the pack will come up with their own code phrase. They’ll give this code to the new wolf that they send to the pack as well as rub their scent on them. The scent and that code are the password to be let in and anyone on the border patrol team as well as the alphas will know these codes. An example would be, uh… let’s say mine would be “the blood of the rose sent me”. The wolf that was recruited would show up at the border, someone would greet them and they would repeat that phrase and also have my scent on their fur. They’re allowed in as a member. They won’t need to be considered probationary because by the time they’re allowed in they would have had to be accepted twice. If a recruiter would like to escort the new wolf back all the way that’s okay but I think it’s more efficient this way, so the wolf that is recruiting might be able to find multiple wolves in a single outing rather than going back and forth for each wolf.”

He paused in his speaking again. He knew this was a lot of information, and now was the time for Horizon to ask any questions or get anything clarified if he needed. Titan was not the most adept speaker so the chances that everything had come out exactly as he meant and perfectly understandable was not as high as he’d like.

“Sorry to weigh you down with so much information but that is the detailed description of the gamma’s responsibilities, I just wanted to be upfront with that. If you feel like that’s something you’re ready and willing to take on then we can move onto the audition phase.”

Titan tried his best at an encouraging smile but he wasn’t sure if he could pull of an expression like that. He felt like Horizon could do great things for the pack. The maned wolf was not cocky but he was obviously self-aware enough to understand his abilities and the bi-color wolf agreed. He would be a perfect fit for gamma.
