aurora borealis- noun plural: An aurora that occurs in northern regions of the earth. Also called northern lights.

In the middle of a dense forest of coniferous trees lies the Aurora Borealis pack, its name coming from its location. At certain times of the year, the northern lights appear, dancing almost magically in the sky. A narrow trail leads you through the close evergreens. Giving into temptation, you begin moving your paws. By venturing into this territory, you are venturing into a land belonging to a pair of feared leaders. You have heard rumors of them...but you decide to take your chances and hope that the tales of blood and death are merely fabricated stories to scare wolves.

You have walked nearly five minutes before you realize the sound of paws stepping somewhere from behind. Deciding that you've made a mistake, you quickly turn around, but find that you cannot go any further. Standing before you is one of the mighty kings you've heard of. His blood red pelt clings over perfectly toned bands of muscle. But that isn't what causes such fear in your veins. One of his amber eyes has a horrid, bleeding scar across it, and his good eye seems to stare right through you. His face is expressionless, giving off none of his intentions. You cower away as his jaws part.

"I'm Hell Demon."

His voice was deep and cut through the air like a hot knife through butter. Right where he left off, another voice picks up from behind you. You whirl around and find yourself facing another male with steely muscles beneath his pelt, which seems to consist of every shade of brown. He had startled you, and you're amazed how you hadn't at all detected his approach.

"And I am Ghost...we're the alphas of Aurora Borealis."

His deep voice was laced thickly with a Native American accent. His own golden eyes are directing a harsh glare your way. Now you're caught in the middle...your breathing has become heavy in your panic and you're not sure which to face.

"You've foolishly trespassed into our territory. You face the one called Hell Demon's whose voice is once more addressing you. Get out, or become a corpse along our border."

It's obvious they mean business. So now it's up to you...take your chances and stay, or heed their warning and waste no time getting out with your life.

Loyalty means nothing unless it has at its heart the absolute principle of self-sacrifice

....................................................................................................................................................................................

If there was anything that Kalgalath was sure off, it was that nothing in life was sure, which thereby meant that nothing in life was fair. He had had a good puphood with loving parents, unlike so many of the dear friends he had come to know. Hellene's pack had believed in function, leaving no space for love. Henadin, his friend from Saw Tooth, had had his whole family family when he and his sister were naught but pups. Joker, one of the pack mates he had only recently met, had been forced to fight for his life since birth - not a single moment had been sure, had been secure. And so while Kalgalath had had a good puphood, he had had rocky years since then. His first love, his best friend Nika had left him, taking with her their unborn pups and not telling him. She had fled, feeling trapped and unsure, breaking his heart - and would continue to do so for years, leading him on a race of cat and mouse time and time again. Feuds had caused strife between Kalgalath and Aindreas, until it was revealed that they were father and son. Nika had returned only to break him once again... And then of course there was Zig and Blayre.

Zig and Kal had met after the death of the Alphess of Aurora Borealis. They had been set against each other at first, with Kal wanting the throne, whereas Zig - who had been there for years - wanted an experienced pack member to claim Sin's crown. But with Kong's backing, Kalgalath had become the next King. Zig had come to accept that, come to accept Kal... And then they had become close. At first it was just talk, just time spent together... But longing grew, desire came, until Kalgalath had finally confessed his love for her. But that was the only time that it was good, the only time that their relationship was true. The power that their relationship brought to Zig changed her, turned her cold, turned her bitter. Jealousy overwhelmed her when Nika came, and caused her to abuse Kalgalath's friends, especially Magic. Time after time Zig had left, and Kal had continually accepted her back openly, wanting only for her to find happiness so that eventually they could be happy together. But Zig never reached that point, and even neglected Kal's adopted daughter Blayre. The final straw had been when Zig's ex-mate had returned, and Kalgalath had walked in on affectionate caresses. Had jealousy stung him, causing him to overreact? Perhaps. But Cody had not been a member of the pack for too long for him to just stroll over the border, and was unknown to Kalgalath. Not to mention the history he had had with Zig - or so Kal thought. After exiling Zig, he and Cody had had words away from the pack, revealing that the emotions Zig had felt for Cody had never been reciprocated. Zig's mental illness had come to light, and everything had become clear.

For months Kal had blamed himself with 'what-ifs'. If he had supported her more... If he had paid more attention to her... the guilt ruined him to near extinction, his form falling into disarray from neglect, and he had very nearly given up the throne. It was only with the support of his pack members that he had recovered.

He had forgotten Zig... But with her absence had come Blayre's absence, and she was one that Kalgalath would never forget. He would never forget the small, weak ball of fluff that he had found near death, a newborn abandoned by the river's edge on the cliff above the cascades. By saving Blayre, Hellene had finally won Kalgalath's trust, and Blayre had healed him from his past hurts - the pain of not being there for Aindreas, Adara, and Rohan's younger years dulled. She had been a daddy's girl until her teen years in which she had rebelled, but Kalgalath loved her nonetheless. He had wanted her to feel the love he had as a pup, and lamented only that she had never had a mother. But when she had left, running from the packlands after talking with Aindreas, Kalgalath had let her go. Blayre was stubborn, and would not be found if she did not want to - if Aurora Borealis was not the home she needed, then despite his desire to have his daughter at his side, he would give her the space she desired. No news ever came of her - be it life or death and each day Kalgalath woke, speaking a silent prayer to the gods Tor and Fenris for her safe-keeping, wondering where she was, what she was doing, and if she was happy.

Until today.

Kalgalath had stood stark still for the past few minutes after hearing her vocals, sure that he must be dreaming even though it was midday. Small gusts of wind moved his hairs, moved the branches in the trees above him and covered his pelt lightly with fallen snow, but he remained still, processing what he had heard. Pinnae erect, lids unblinking, he just stood there and thought. It had been...what... Years? Yes, perhaps years since she had left, and though the voice was deeper than the sweet melody she had once spoken, more mature.... It was most definitely Blayre's voice. A single flake fell, landing in his eye, and it was like a wakeup call that brought him into motion. Suddenly, his statuesque form exploded, a mix of limbs that pushed against the hardened earth, Kalgalath running through the maze of firs as fast as his body allowed, ducking his head to evade the branches. Despite being in good shape, his heart was thudding, thumping in his chest, running away from him. But it only escalated when he finally broke through the tree line and came face to face with his daughter. His arctics laid upon her, oblivious to the wolf who had met her first.

"...Blayre?..."

She was full grown - taller, and more well shaped than she had been when last he had seen seen. She had scars on her that he could not account for, aside from the one on her should which had been red and fresh. But it was definitely her - the same coloring, the same underlying smell, the same eyes.

"Sweetheart... Oh I've missed you." He moved toward her slowly, not wanting her to frighten and run away again... But if she allowed him to, he would slip his neck over hers and pull her close, silent tears streaming down his cheeks.
