Live through this lie

Was I left behind?
Tell me, tell me I survived.

I had only been standing with Orhan for a few minutes, but sweat had drenched my coat. It pooled at the bottom most point of my barrel, dripping salty droplets of moisture into the hot sand sand periodically. I could feel the sting of it around my eyes when I blinked too hard. It pimpled along the soft, dark skin of my muzzle. Orhan could probably tell my from my somewhat laboring breathes that I was ready to find some shade and perhaps a drink. So when he suggests we trek further into the territory toward an oasis, I merely bob my head and follow quickly in his wake.

I was too busy focusing on my long jarring steps in the soft sand to notice any ailment that plagued my friend here. He scaled the dunes with ease, and his nimble footwork showed only expertise that came with living here for a very long time. I knew I must look foolish next to him, my heavy frame teetering on tired tree trunks for limbs as I took one unsure step after another.

As the oasis came into view I smiled at Orhan, partly because I was relieved to find reprieve from the sun. But this green space in a sea of orange was also a sight to behold. At first I had worried for Nova. If she was anything like our dainty mother, the desert would be hard on her. And I imagine like Evaline, she wouldn't be afraid to voice her concerns about such. But then again, maybe she wasn't like her mother. She had chosen this place, from what I know. She wasn't captured and dragged here.

While Orhan called out for her, I followed him to the water's edge, dropping my head quickly to slurp at the water here. I was too thirsty to care much about its taste. Once I had drank my fill, I ambled back toward the shade, keeping my gaze on the stallion standing before me. When he asked again about Nova, my copper-colored ear lobes swiveled forward and back as I racked my mind for a polite response. "We've never met, actually." I said, seeing no reason to hide what was likely to be an abrupt and abrasive introduction. Evaline told me how mad Nova was when she dragged them on some sort of misplaced journey to find me. I felt bad for her. I know how tough our mother can be. I couldn't imagine being alone in a new place with her when she's in one of her moods. I feared she hated me for that time in her life. Maybe I deserved it. "She was born after I left the islands for a while."

It didn't take long for the frame of a small mare to appear from within the shade of the green oasis. I studied her through the haze of the heat and my own sweat in my eyeballs. But she became clear as she approached. I could see a lot of mom in her -- the sway in her walk, her delicate legs and lofty, light strides. Even the dish in her face. But her eyes and her coat were all Valentine. A unsuspecting chill ran down the length of my spine. I straightened up as she stopped and said hello to us both and returned her nicker with a whinny of my own. "Vita Nova." I said in a hoarse tone. "I'm Shamwari."

I stumbled over what to say next, but studied her intently, waiting to gauge her reaction before choosing to say more. All I heard was the gentle swoop of the strands of my tail as it attacked a random fly or two that hovered near my sweaty flank. "I heard you were here and wanted to meet you as soon as possible." I said quickly. "I lead the Prairie now. I'm happy to see you've chosen to live with my friend, Orhan. But you are welcome home any time you'd like. Paradiso lives with us." I said, hoping to see her light up at her brother's name. "And your... our mother, she also lives on Salem now. She lives in the Dunes. I'm sure she'd love to see you."
