"You're much better than wine," Arthur reassured her, accepting the bottle and setting it down on the table, "much chattier too." He grinned and leaned forwards to open the second drawer of the cabinet. When he straightened up again he was holding a bottle opener and two wine glasses. "A surprising present from my sister," he explained waving the bottle opener through the air, "she says I drink too much." Arthur removed the cork from the bottle with a practiced flourish and then poured them each a generous measure into each glass. Arthur felt her hand on his and paused. He looked down at it and then up at her, grey eyes that spoke too little looking into blue ones that had seen too much. When he glanced back down at her hand he found he wanted to kiss it. The feeling surprised him. He held out the glass to her with his free hand, his smile growing. "Well," he began thoughtfully, taking his first sip of wine "I could tell you about some of the frankly ludicrous, yet amusing, petitions I had to sit through today, or, I could bore you with my worries about that fact my teenage son currently has two girls in his room kept company by a bottle of champagne he doesn't think I saw on my way past." Arthur paused and laughed leaning a little closer to her, "of course," he continued, "then you'd realise how utterly boring and old I've become and decide what a terrible idea this was." His eyes held hers steadily. "And then you'd leave and I'd feel very sorry about that. I have missed you." Arthur didn't take his eyes off her as he took another drink. "You could tell me what you've been up to," he proposed steadily, "or you could beat me soundly at dice or cards. If I remember rightly you always had the luck of the devil."  |
