10 things you probably didn’t know about Anapa
Let’s see if we can reach 10…

1. It’s known that Anapa is based on the character of Anubis from the Ancient Egyptian pantheon. Set, Osiris, Isis, Nephthys and Horus all appear in his origins stories under different names, but Anapa is the only one who has retained a real Egyptian name. According to the Akkadian transcription of the Amarna letters, Anubis’ name (inpw, ‘Een-poo’) was pronounced in Egyptian as ‘Anapa’. All of the other names in his origins story are names I made up.

2. For a long time, Anubis was one of my least favourite Egyptian gods because of poor Hollywood portrayals. I became more sympathetic towards him when I was writing my dissertation on Thoth (Anubis is often paired with Thoth when Thoth is doing his underworld duties), and that sympathy developed further with re-readings of the Osiris myth.

3. Anubis actually rarely appears in mythology, despite being commonplace in religion. The only reference to him in myths I’ve found so far is in the Osiris myth, and even then only briefly. Because of this, I had to construct Anapa’s personality completely from scratch on the basis of how I imagined him to be, rather than using mythological inspiration like I did for Thoth.

4. Nico di Angelo (son of Hades) from the Percy Jackson books is one of Anapa’s biggest literary inspirations.

5. Where Anapa is from, working in a mortuary is considered honourable work and most people don’t find it creepy. People from his home found him creepy because of his personality rather than his work.

6. Using magic on Anapa’s home planet always causes some kind of discomfort or pain. Even on Shaman, Anapa gets headaches when he uses his death sensing power.

7. Anapa’s paternal heritage is unclear, and his father could be one of two people; that said, no matter who his father was, he could be considered the heir to the throne. If he was offered the throne he would turn it down, but wouldn’t know who to favour as a successor. He doesn’t think anyone in his family is really suitable to ruling.

8. Although he’s only seventeen, Anapa has been considered an adult for a while and regards himself as one. He would be offended to be treated as a child or teenager on Shaman.

9. I wouldn’t like to say for certain but as far as I’ve felt out, Anapa is probably asexual. If he isn’t asexual then he’s likely homosexual, since he is completely disinterested in women. There’s no concept of different sexualities where he’s from, so within a few years he would have been expected to take a wife.

10. Anapa isn’t remotely squeamish and has an intelligent, enquiring mind, so he would take very well to a career as a forensic detective if he lived on Earth.

10 things you probably didn’t know about Amber

1. Amber has gone through a number of different incarnations because I could never settle on her. In a past version, she was a blonde, slightly punky problem child (hello Saph). She actually appears briefly in one of the version 5 plots as the girl who is there when Aura comes around in hospital during the third curse.

2. Amber was born with a lot of different powers, including Metal Manipulation. Before settling on her ‘final form’, I stripped her right back to just one power to give myself something to focus on.

3. Amber’s obsession with her ‘man hands’ is a character trait I pulled directly from one of my old friends in secondary school. Some other elements of her personality also come from other friends, including Merlin and Edel.

4. I’ve never worked out whether Amber is actually pretty but lacks self-confidence, or if she really is as plain as she thinks she is. I tend to leave that up to whoever she’s threading with.

5. Amber’s familiar’s name, Reyna, means “queen” because yaaas, queen.

6. Amber and Tahl both have an aversion to Mallos purely because I just don’t really fancy playing them with him. He’d want an active role in their lives, and I don’t want that so I made them not want that for solely that reason. The reason given for Amber’s aversion is because she was bullied as a child for being his daughter.

7. The reason behind picking a giant snake familiar for Amber was actually because I wanted to develop her from a shy little girl into a really badass spy for the crown. I envisioned her interrogating suspects who were bound to a chair with the giant snake wrapped around them, her fangs bared as a kind of threat. Her girlish, shy appearance would become a personality which she could put on while undercover. In the end I never developed her into the ‘end character’ I initially had in mind – partially because I was kind of enjoying having a ‘normal’ character, and partially because I felt like the progression towards that might end up forced.

8. Amber’s muse music, bizarrely, is Elton John. I promise this wasn’t my idea. She shares the same music album as Khasekhemwy.

9. ‘Amber’ is one of my favourite girls’ names, and would definitely be on my list of potentials to name a daughter if I ever had one. It was also the name of one of my first and favourite ever fictional characters which I created, long before I started roleplaying. The character was a spaniel villain clone based on this TY toy. My friend had the same toy, whose manufacturing name was Frolic, so I renamed mine Amber after the eye colour. We pretended mine was an evil clone of hers. I still have that toy at my parents’ house.

10. Amber and I both have social anxiety, but they work in such different ways that I can’t really use my experiences much to write her. I rely on chats and cues from my other friends who also have/had social anxiety.
