The summer had brought not only sweltering heat but also sorrowful tragedy to the wolves of Moladion. To many, the heat had been the worst. To Halcyon and several others, the death of both Athine and Preator had been heartbreaking. The last few weeks, the lost prince had been doing what he could to easy Aster’s pain and help Pine with her plans to take Iromar back. However, tonight, he was alone and finding comfort in his own company. The moon was bright in the sky, guiding him as he made his way through the vast field.
The brutal summer was finally coming to a close and the land could begin to recover from the devastating heat that had tortured so many. The tall grass was still dry and prickly to the touch and the lake was still only half full with murky and stale water. But, slowly, things were beginning to heal. Already, many of the prey that had left Moladion in search of more food had started to return. The scent of bison, elk, and other animals was fresh on the wind, but Halcyon was in no mood for hunting.
Walking aimlessly, the wolf seemed to be lost in thought as he traveled on his way. A rabbit that had been munching on a twig suddenly bolted away as he neared, but he barely registered that the animal had been there at all. Only when he reached the edge of the fields did he stop and gaze up at the moon. The bright, round orb glowed down on him, causing his fur to shimmer slightly. It was a beautiful sight and he couldn’t help but smile at it. A gentle breeze drifted down and brought with it a cool sensation that made him shiver in delight.
It also brought the scent of a wolf nearby. Hackles rose instinctively as Halcyon returned his attention to the ground. Honey colored eyes gazed around the field to see if he could pinpoint where the stranger was. He remained calm on the outside, but inside he was preparing for anything that the other was planning. Whether that be a friendly chat or a deadly assult.
