The sunlight was abhorrent on his skin. Once he would have basked in its glory, enjoying the way it warmed him and the way it danced across his polished fur, showing of its sheen and shine. Akuji, the perfect model of the triad of health, strength, and beauty. He had used his charm on many a femme to get what he wanted… but never to abuse them or take advantage of them of course. He was not and never would be like his brother Harries. Though brothers, the two of them were so different. Harries fully accepted his role in spreading the seed of their bloodlines, though he did not seem to mind the other breeds. Akuji on the other hand believed full-heartedly in the superiority of his own breed compared to the rest, and had no desire to spread his seed to every femme in his sight. Once he had pretended that he did want to – when he first came here, he had flirted with every maned queen who walked in his path… but pups were something that he dreaded. His own puphood had been filled with every sort of torture, pain, and manipulation, and he was sure that he would never make a good father.

And here he was now – with four pups, but of the ones who had been born only one still remained with him – Shasta. But even she, whom he had bonded with, now hated him. Perhaps how she even feared him, given his show at Cold Summers. But at least his gene for insanity had not been passed on – Shasta had no beast within her, no monster scratching to be released. He loved her, and had she a monster of her own, he would have loved her enough to kill her. He never would have wanted her to experience the horror of being betrayed by her own body, the feeling of tendrils creeping into her mind and controlling it without her allowance. The feeling of her soul being stolen away by the devil when she murdered hundreds of her own kind, condemning her to hell. No… if she had had a monster Akuji would have ended her life when she was still an innocent, ensuring that she would be safe in her place in heaven.

Unlike him.

If Akuji was sure of anything, it was that he was going to hell. Perhaps he would even have a throne there where they would sit him upon, either to ask for advice or to torture him endlessly with scenes of his own sins. And yet throughout all of the murders he had committed, none of them compared to the injury he had inflicted upon Katia. He had told her to run. He had warned her that she needed to leave, to leave Cold Summers, to leave him. But she had not listened and so he had hurt her. He had wounded her physically and perhaps even had scarred her heart and soul. But his duty to her would never be over – he needed to protect her from the rest of life, especially now that the paws holding the strings of the beast was dead. Though his demon would surely not be summoned again, though, it could still escape. And though he was stuck in limbo – the need to protect her from the world and the need to protect her from himself battling against each other incessantly.

And with each moment, he wondered over and over how she had released him from his master. Never before had Perdere retreated before each enemy was dead, never before had another been able to save themselves by returning his sanity to him. But Katia had. Curiosity and horror overwhelmed him and he both feared and longed to know the secret of her power, but his need to remain away from her… near to her… far away and yet close complicated matters.

Thus had he kept himself from the den that they had previously shared. Instead, he slept hidden in the shadows, surrounded by leaves that would signal him if he sought to murder her in his sleep. He took every precaution… but now she seemed to want to throw caution to the wind. She searched for him, sought him out, but ever was he dancing backward away from her. He was to be her shadow, not her companion… but it was not enough for her. And so the princess called to him, pulling him from his camoflauge. Reluctantly he walked toward her, head low and tail tucked, but it flickered to and fro – agitated.‘Akuji? There’s some things we need to talk about.

His pinnae flattened against his skull and he growled softly, keeping his distance from her. “There is nothing to talk about, Princess, the threat of Farant is gone. While you live here so too must I so that you are… safe…” He stuttered over the last few words and looked away, though in truth his muds had never even risen to meet her gaze. “I will return to the shadows, to the darkness for that is where this brute belongs. You belong in the light and far from me.
